It didn't take long for Junko to accept her new followers...mainly Nagito. She assigned Mikan to the infirmary as their nurse while Nagito was left as the new co-captain or 'Junko's plaything'.
"Aww, c'mon Nagito...you would look cute in this..." She teased, showing him a servant outfit. "This would be the perfect thing to emit INTENSE despair."
He sighed while face palming. "No offence, Captain. I wouldn't be caught dead in that. Now, if you will excuse me..."
He left the Captain's quarters to the fresh air of the sea. It had been two weeks since Kokichi found them in the marketplace. Within that time, the two of them were easily accepted. Mikan was so busy, dealing with sick and injured crew in the infirmary, that she hardly had any free time.
"Oy, White Mane!" One of the crew members called out to him. Since everyone had their own weird nicknames, Nagito got off easy with his. "Come join us!" He trotted over to them and rested on the railing.
"So, you cuddling up to the Lady?" asked, nudging Nagito. Lady was Junko's nickname to the crew, though no one would ever say it in front of her.
"Fuck off." He replied nonchalantly. "Besides, I don't have the time to do that stuff."
"I just figured that since the two of you were getting all buddy buddy...you would know why we are headed to the Caribbean?"
"Wait...the Caribbean?" Another member joined in out of nowhere. "There isn't any villages out there."
"Yeah, but I heard that paper she found back a while back...contains the elixir of life."
"Okay...you need to lay off the booze, matey."
"Wait, hang on..." Nagito interrupted, raising his hands in the air. "Can you tell me what's going on?"
"What? You had no idea?" The third crew member asked. "Huh...guess you really are a greenhorn. They say if you drink the tear of a mermaid, you will gain the immortality of a god! Not to mention, the ability to heal your wounds."
Nagito didn't say a word. Mermaids didn't even exist. Despite all that, there was this small part of him wishing that it was true.
"Listen up!" Junko announced as she came out of her quarters. "It is time to prepare for hunting season! Today's catch: the rare man-eating mermaid!"
Everyone gasped in disbelief but then cheered. If they did catch one, they would be the first in history. Nagito couldn't believe her words as he stepped away from the crowd and into the infirmary.
"Is it true?" Mikan asked, grabbing his arm. "Did she say 'mermaid'?"
"Yeah...she did." Nagito sighed.
"Should we...report this...?"
"It would be too late. We are already so far out off port. It will take them forever to catch up."
"What do we do now?"
"Just keep your head low and your guard up. We are on our own." Nagito said, patting her on the back.

It felt like eternity but a few hours later, they had arrived to an island where most of the merman sightings were recorded. Nagito could feel his heart pounding as he and a few of the crew members were shipped down off one of two boats. As they rowed over to shore, everyone kept their guard up. The waters were dark as the moon reflected off the surface. At any moment, someone or something could pop out and attack.Dragging the boat on the surface, they began their formations. Nagito hid in the shadows, holding a blade with a shaky hand while the rest of them waited on the shore with a net. He couldn't help but admire the scenery as he saw the other boat overlapped with the moon.
"This better work..." He muttered to himself.
Suddenly, a soft voice began to harmonize from out of nowhere. A young woman with blonde hair with sea green tips and golden eyes appeared from the surface, surprising the pirates on the boat.
"Hello..." She greeted. The pirates stuttered in surprise. "Wow...you guys are really talkative, huh?"
Next thing they know, she showed her fangs and dragged one down into the ocean. Panicking, they scurried back away, only for more hands to grab them as well. In a few minutes, the entire boat was empty. Some of the crew on the shore witnessed the horror and rushed over to the edge.
A few metres away, a young merman peered from behind a rock. He had short spiky brown hair and green eyes. His scales were a deep blue that covered his the sides of his neck, belly and all of his arms. He had a fin that started from his neck all the way down his back.
On the shore, he saw someone walk out of the darkness. His white hair that reminded him of corals. His piercing eyes seem to touch his soul. The way he moved was entrancing...however, he noticed the mermaids rushing towards the shores.
'SHIT!' He thought as diving down and swimming as fast as he could.
He splashed his tail against the water in an attempt to scare them off. It kind of worked as some of the crew backed off in fear. He saw the golden hair mermaid reaching out to the white haired man and immediately jumped out of the water. He pushed him away from the edge and landed onto the cool sand. The next thing he knew, a sharp pain emitted from his tail. He looked to see the blade had stabbed him through his tail fins as blood spluttered out.
Nagito and Hajime finally looked into each other's eyes, both scared and panting. Nagito, who was secretly gay, had no idea how someone could be so beautiful as this.
He got distracted that he didn't notice the rest of the crew throwing the net on top of Hajime. The merman hissed as he struggled to escape out. Nagito let go out the sword and backed away as two of them picked the merman up and loaded him onto the boat.
"Woah! Nice job, Nagito! The Captain is gonna be so pleased." One member said, patting him on the shoulder.
For the first time in his life, Nagito knew what despair felt.
