Doing this just for fun, but decided it needed 2 parts, even though it's only about 600 words long right now. But I want food, so...

Onwards!-----

Though commonplace where you came from, there was something extremely different about your kingdom when compared to most others.

Women weren't allowed to enlist in the army.

So you fit right in, hair cut short, slacks, and a simple shirt, as opposed to the rest of the girls’ dresses or skirts.

Your father had raised you to be the perfect soldier, not a trace of feminism to be found.

Your mother would have opposed it, had she still been alive. However, a raid on your town left many people without a spouse.

So all of the still living women had to remarry into one of the families without a wife, as per another of the Rules.

Men, however, could refuse the marriage, like your father did, instead choosing to raise his only child on his own.

He had been teaching you swordplay for as long as you could remember, and teaching you how to act like a boy for even longer.

If you, upon entering the army, were to let your disguise slip, you would be executed. Simple as that.

During initiation, you held yourself with more pride and purpose than most of the soldiers. You weren't ready to die, at least not without a fight.

-----TIMESKIP BROUGHT TO YOU BY ME NOT KNOWING WHAT TO FILL THIS WITH…-----

Everyone was scrambling in the barracks. One of the Nohrian princes, Leo, was coming to hand-pick some of the best soldiers in the army to fight for Nohr.

People were polishing their armor and weapons, trying to make them look pristine. You, however, were thinking of what you'd do if you got picked. How do you hide your biggest secret from the mage Prince of Nohr?

-----(Might do just the lines instead of TIMESKIPS. Which do you like more? Comment to let me know so I can change my style if needed, thanks!)-----

"Yes, Lord Leo. We pride ourselves in having no females in the entire army. Men, after all, have superior strength."

Leo stopped in front of you. He gave you a once-over, his eyes widening slightly. You silently pleaded that he wouldn't give up your ruse.

"How about this one?"

The general looked at you and chuckled. "Ah, yes the son of General (Last Name). Quite the swordsman, if I do say so myself!"

Leo seemed to be deep in thought, but settled on a decision fairly quickly.

"I'll take him."

The general nodded to you, and you bowed wordlessly, returning to the barracks to retrieve your belongings.

You were moving to Nohr.

----------

"So what's up with being the 'son' of the General?"

Lord Leo hadn't surprised you with the question, but you didn't want to give up the disguise quite yet.

"What do you mean?"

He gave you a slightly frustrated look. "You're a girl, I can tell from your gait and posture. The facial features don't do it immediately, but once you see the other things, it's a dead giveaway."

You sighed. 'At least he waited until we left the grounds.'

"My father has been teaching me how to wield a sword since my mother died. Since women aren't allowed in the army, he also taught me how to act like a man so I wouldn't be executed."

"Executed?"

"Your life is the price for breaking any of the Rules. I happen to be good at not getting caught."

Leo nodded, then opened the gates in front of you. You gasped at the sheer size of Castle Krakenberg.

"Welcome to your new home, soldier."

-----So exciting!

Will update with part 2 after I write it… so after breakfast.
