Camila sat down next to her husband and daughter on the couch. Alvera came in after them and sat down in the chair across from both parties. She took the time they had to tell them what had been happening.
"Cortez was part of a system before, but he went rogue," she said. "He was a part of a large crime clan. They do as they are told and are very loyal. The power went to Cortez's head. He went crazy. They let him off the hook because he was a very strong asset of theirs. You've made some of the worst people angry you two. Killing him was the last thing they wanted, but at the same time he had been failing his mission."
"And you know this how?" asked Regina.
"I heard him talking about it with some other person while I was there. You know about it yourself, don't you? I mean, you are his sister after all."
"What?!" exclaimed Camila, Isabella, and Epifanio together.
"Excuse me," Regina responded.
She left the living room and went to her bedroom to be alone. Regina cried silently, completely embarrassed and ashamed that she had a person like him for a brother. Well, a half-brother. Their mother was the same, their father was not. Her little brother caused her so much embarrassment and pain. Thinking about it made her feel worse.
A pair of arms wrapped around her soothingly. Her husband had come up to see if she was alright. She'd been crying for twenty minutes if not half an hour. He knew there was nothing he could say to ease her ache. Eduardo kissed her cheek, sat her in his lap, and held her while she now whimpered.
"Hey," Camila said quietly. "Can I talk to her alone?"
"You going to be alright, or do you want me to stay?" Eduardo asked his wife.
"I'll be fine. This was bound to happen sooner or later," she replied.
Eduardo left the room and left the women to their business. He stayed by the door until he felt it was safe to leave.
"I'm sorry if I made you feel bad. I just didn't expect it."
"Don't be. I should've said something sooner."
"If you wanted to keep it a secret, I understand why and I don't blame you for having kept it quiet it for so long. So you're really his sister then?"
"Yes, but only half. Same mother, different father. He's my little brother. I tried to fix him, and for a while, it actually worked. Now...."
"It's a much different story. It's hard to change people. They have to decide for themselves whether or not they will change. If you're still wondering if I hate you, I don't."
"You sure?"
"Of course. You helped us out so many times."
"Heh, thanks. But, how could she possibly know anything about it? They never tell anyone outside of their group much less with anyone else around."
"I'm having my own suspicions about her. She makes me uneasy."
"I can tell. Let's change to go outside. It's a nice day, so maybe it will help to ease the rest of the day along."
Camila agreed and stepped out of the room to her own. They now all lived in one building. Safety in numbers. Once Camila got there, she received an unexpected gift. She picked up the card in front.
