Classes were quiet

Classes were quiet. The school lived in fear. It was like we were on the hunt for muggle-borns. Parentages being kept a secret. People were lying. It seemed like the whole world was doomed to burn down around us.

"Hey, Lot. You alright?" I look over. I must have zoned out. Flitwick had ended his lesson. Students were leaving. Except me and a very concerned looking Seamus. I swallow hard. "Yeah just distracted I guess."

"Do you want to come to the library with me? It might help you be...less distracted." Seamus offers. I chuckle. "Less distracting? You?" I grab my bag. "You know what I mean." Seamus says with a smug look. We start for the hallway. "I'm not sure if I have time...." I start, but as I look up- a very angry looking Slytherin kid is staring right at me.

It's like he can see deep into my soul. I feel my palms go sweaty and my body start to shake. "Actually never mind. Homework seems like a good idea right now." Seamus squints. "Uhh, okay?" "Lead the way." Seamus seems confused as he walks past the Slytherin kid. Seamus starts down the stairs. I follow suit, but the Slytherin boy trips me. Luckily I didn't have anything in my hand.

So when Seamus spins around, my arms crash right around his neck and he catches me. His hands on my hips before I fell forward knocking us both over. He looks into my surprised eyes. I think about his laugh and our doodles.  He really is a sweet guy.

But soon his stance changes. He looks angry and calls out to the Slytherin boy. "Hey! Did you just trip her?" I tug at his neck as he still hasn't let me go. "No, no. Seamus, I tripped on my own." The Slytherin boy snorts. "What's so funny?" Seamus says finally releasing me.

I grab the railing. "Maybe I did. Maybe I didn't. All you soft houses are the same. You can't protect each other from everything." He laughs as he walks up to Flitwick's class. I tug on Seamus's arm. "We'll keep trying though. And good will overcome evil." Seamus shouts to him. The kid stares back, looking unconvinced. "Eventually." I say quietly. "Good will overcome evil...eventually."

The kid rolls his eyes and other students start to flood the stairs. Seamus and I walk to the library silently. We sit at a table by ourselves. There are a lot of kids here today. Finally I break the silence. "You didn't have to do that." Seamus closes his book. "I know he tripped you. I could see all over his face..." I go to protest. "And you are a terrible liar." he finishes.

I sniffle. "I just..." Seamus looks at me expectantly. "Now is not the time to push their buttons. You know that." Seamus stands up from the table. "Well they pushed mine first." He storms off without another word.

I sink back in my chair. Crap.

That night I sat around the common room's fireplace with the girls.

"Lottie, that's crazy. Their torment is becoming physical. Are you sure you don't want an escort?" Hannah asks me. I shake my head. "It's okay. I am just lucky Seamus was there that time or I would have fallen on my face."

"Anna, I'm tired. Are you almost done?" Susan whines. Anna was the only one still doing homework. "Go upstairs. I don't mind." She says trying to wave us off. "We're not leaving you alone, remember?" Hannah says knowingly.

Anna sighs. She looks around at all of our tired faces. She smiles.

She closes her book. "It's just reading. I'll finish it tomorrow morning." "Yes!" Susan cheers as we head upstairs everyone falls asleep almost immediately.

I awake to a blood curdling scream. I sit straight up in bed. "What was that?" I ask. "What time is it?" Susan asks. "Where the hell am I?" Hannah mumbles clearly the most out of it.

I rub my face. I hear fast walking feet rush down the stairs. "We should probably go check it out." I stand slowly and find my slippers. Susan and Hannah do the same.

The lump in Anna's bed hasn't moved. I roll my eyes. "Anna, get up."

Susan walks over impatiently and tosses the covers off. Hannah and I both gasp to see Anna not there and only a lump of pillows in her place. "Anna?" I call out. I look around the room.

"Oh my god." I whisper as a thought creeps to my mind. Hannah looks up at me- clearly the same thought hit her too.

The scream. I rush down the stairs. "Excuse me. Move. Please. Sorry. Excuse me." I utter as I push past other Hufflepuffs. I'm almost to the common room. My foot has barely touched the floor when arms and a strong body surround me.

"You don't want to look. Turn around." I recognize the commanding voice as Cedric. "No, no. It's her. Isn't it?" I cry. He tries to hold me still. With my face buried in his chest I can't see her petrified body.

I push him away as hard as I can. I fall to the ground next to her. I kneel and cover my mouth in horror. Her potions book open beside her. I hear Susan crying. "I rushed her. Oh my god I rushed her." Hannah was shushing her. I reach over and touch Anna's body. In her little pjs with a pencil still in hand. She looks so peaceful.

"Damn it, Anna. You weren't suppose to be alone." I put my head in my hands. Students were whispering. I could hear them. Most didn't know she was a muggle-born. How would you? Until she lay here, frozen on the floor, shouting it to the world.

I feel myself start to cry. Cedric pulls me close to him. "Good has to overcome evil? Right? Good has to win eventually." My whole body shaking against his. He rubs up and down my arms. "Good will win. It always does."
