EDITED: After re-reading the books I have gone in and added more details to this version. I hope you like it! I am always looking for feedback :)
I always thought my life would begin once I got to Hogwarts. It's the place where my parents met, became great wizards, and their lives truly began.
But now that I am here, standing in front of the Hogwarts Express, I feel like too much pressure is here in this moment. Okay, maybe that's dramatic considering I am only 11.
As we stand on Platform 9 and 3/4, my mother is petting my hair. "I'm going to miss you so much." I smile. Up until this point I had been homeschooled. My mom taught me to read and write. She has been my teacher, my mentor and my best friend.
"I'll miss you too. I'll write everyday..." I start. "You will not. You should make friends, learn magic and have fun....I'd appreciate a letter every week." She says with a smirk. "Tell Mr. Diggory, Cedric will write too." Beside me Cedric snorts. "Yeah right." I shoot him a look. He thinks he is so cool, must be something about being 14.
My mom quickly hugs him as well, even though he is not her kid. I go to hug my dad. "I'll miss you the most." I whisper to him. My dad can always make me feel better and was there for every milestone I've had up to this point. He looks choked up. "Goodbye Charlie." Cedric tugs on my arm. "Come on, I want to get a good seat." I wave goodbye once more to my parents, then follow my childhood best friend into the unknown by climbing aboard the train.
Cedric picks a cart somewhere in the middle and I follow him in. "Is this everything you ever dreamed it would be?" he asks just to rub it in my face that's he's done this before. Cedric is 3 years older than me. So this is his 4th year.
The train makes a noise, like it's about to take off. I look out the window once more and spot my parents and wave. Then we slowly start to chug along.
"It's a long ride, Charlie. So you better get comfortable." I roll my eyes.
My name is Charlotte, but that seems really formal if you ask me. I usually introduce myself as Lottie. My mom calls me Lottie, even Cedric's parents who I've known since I was born call me Lottie. But my dad always liked Charlie, so he won't shift and Cedric thinks it's funny to imitate him.
Cedric can be my best friend and my biggest irritator, sometimes in the same day...no wait in the same sentence. But he sits with me on my first train ride because that's what his parents asked him to do.
The Diggory's were like a second set of parents to me. Our parents were all in Hufflepuff together like 15 years ago. And they always stayed in touch. We see them for every holiday and we have monthly game nights that continued even when Cedric was at Hogwarts. There is even a picture of Cedric holding me when I'm not even a day old.
Our parents were just seemingly interwoven. Our moms were best friends and our dads seemingly brought out the worst jokes in the other one.
"Hey, what are you thinking about?" Cedric asks giving me a weird look. I'm suddenly brought back to the present. Being in Hufflepuff sealed our parents fate. What if today determines my time at Hogwarts for more that just 7 years...but for the rest of my life.
"I'm nervous, Cedric. What if I get placed in a bad house?" I ask. Cedric shrugs. "I think it hardly matters. But I'm sure you'll be a Hufflepuff with me."
I fiddle with my thumbs. "But what if I'm not?" Cedric shrugs. "I'm sure it'll be fine." I sigh. Cedric always acts like everything is fine. Every concern I have is nothing. I'm just a child. His almost kid sister.
"Besides, Charlie. The sorting hat knows you desperately want to be with me anyway." he says smirking. I groan. He makes every girl fall in love with him except me, but that doesn't stop him from pretending.
"Keep dreaming, Diggory. Keep dreaming."
A few hour into the train ride I am getting antsy. "I'm going to change into my robes." I say. Cedric looks up from a muggle comic book in his lap. "Hmmm? Oh yeah sure." I sigh. I get my robes and head to the back of the train with the bathrooms.
There are a lot of girls in here, but mostly younger looking girls. Once I get into a stall, I hear whispering and giggling. "Do you think it's really him?" "I don't know, how am I supposed to tell?" "The scar you idiot. It's shaped like a lightening bolt."
I straighten my robes. Are they talking about Harry Potter? Growing up in a magical family I did hear a lot of stories about The Boy Who Lived, but they always seemed like a fairytale. It would be crazy if Harry Potter was really coming to Hogwarts and was in my year. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
I return to my carriage with Cedric. "Chocolate frog?" Cedric passes me without looking. I smile. he knows I love the cards. I let the frog hop out and I place it to jump out the window. "Hey I got Merlin."
Suddenly the door swings open. "Has anybody seen a toad? A boy named Neville's lost one." A young girl with bushy hair asks. I shake my head. "Okay thanks." she pops off.
"Is it always this....strange?" I question Cedric. Cedric flips a page of his comic and without looking up says "Yep, pretty much."
Great.
This will be interesting.
