The next morning we still had to go to class

The next morning we still had to go to class. We had a new defense against the dark arts teacher. "Don't you think Dumbledore gets tired of hiring them? Eventually he must just say 'eh, you'll do.'" Anna jokes.

Hannah and I giggle as we skip down the moving staircases. "Dumbledore would do no such thing." Susan insists. "I bet he takes it seriously."

I just look at her with a half smile. "Suze, we've had a werewolf teacher, an unqualified author and worse one connected to You Know Who. And this guy seems to have a screw or two loose."

Hannah sighs. "Lockhart was pretty to look at."

Anna rolls her eyes. "I don't see why we can't have professor Lupin back. It's not like we have class on a full moon."

Susan sighs. "I guess you're right. I just want to believe we have good teachers." Hannah puts her arm to the corner of the wall as we swing around a corner.  "We do...most of the time."

Anna puts her hands on mine and Susan's shoulders. "I've heard a rumor that the DADA position is....CURSED." She shouts making both Susan and I flinch. Anna's laughter echoes in the staircase but I am just glad she's smiling again. Maybe we can pretend to be normal.

"Anna!" Susan whines. I can't help but laugh as reach our final staircase. "Get real, Anna. It's just bad luck."

We enter the classroom. Most of the seats are taken. Hannah and I slide into a set of the desks. Then Susan and Anna slip in behind us.

"Where did you even hear that?" Susan asks Anna. Anna smirks. "Justin told me."

I roll my eyes. "Justin is just trying to get you so scared you jump in his arms and pucker up."

Hannah almost snorts. "Rude." Anna whispers.

I look over and see Seamus laughing about something with his fellow Gryffindors.

Once the new professor comes to the front of the room, we all go quiet. No laughing or any movement. This guy was scary.

"Allistor Moody." he says. I look at Hannah who is practically holding her breath.  "Ex-Auror...." he continues on but I zone out. What kind of person has to leave the job of being an auror. It was like being a superhero. Like a fireman or a doctor. You save lives...but now he teaches here.

"Which of you can tell me how many unforgivable curses there are?" he asks as I tune back in.

"3, sir." Hermione Granger says. "And they are so named?"

"Because they are unforgivable." she declares clearly. "the use of any one of them will.."

"Earn you a one way ticket to Azkaban. Now the ministry says you are too young to see what these curses do. I SAY DIFFERENT."

Hannah reached over and touched my arm. "He's not going..." her whisper trails off.

"You need to know what you are up against. You need to be prepared. You need to find a another place to put your chewing gum besides the underside of your desk, Mr. Finnigan."
