The day had come and Eddy could barely contain himself as the four of them walked to the car rental place around the corner.
He'd reserved a small hatchback online, and Ibo had promised to drive there and back. Eddy really wasn't that sure about driving on the other side of the road.
The lady behind the counter copied Ibo's license and gave him the key, and they walked off to find the car.
Eddy and Brett opted to take the back seat, so they could sit together, and let Sophie ride shot gun. They didn't say much, they just sat, both of them lost in thought, lost in the day they were about to have.
Eddy sat back, his hand holding Brett's on his thigh, and watched the landscape floating past. The yellow rocky desert scenery was stark, but beautiful, and it seemed to make everything they were about to do just that much more real.
He'd written his own vows, and he knew Brett had done the same. He'd watched Brett, pen in hand, his tongue sticking out slightly in concentration, as he'd scribbled them onto a hotel notepad, and he'd felt his heart might burst with love. He couldn't wait to recite his vows out loud in the little chapel they'd found, which had been more than happy to do a same sex wedding when he'd called to check.¨Did you ask about music?¨ Brett suddenly asked.
¨Yep!¨ Eddy replied. ¨They've got classical stuff, we can choose when we're there. And yes, I did check: they don't only have Canon in D.¨
Brett snorted, and the guys in the front started laughing too.
¨Good thing, that¨, Brett said. ¨It's not that I'm that fussy, but there are limits, let's face it.¨
¨Yup, that's where I draw the line, as well. To be honest, I'd rather have Kanye West...¨ Eddy said, grinning. The trip seemed to take an eternity, but they rolled up to the chapel eventually, and before Eddy knew it he had his suit on and was stood in front of a small altar-like thing laden with white flowers, waiting for his man to come walking in. Their friends sat on the front row, smiling at him.
He'd been able to hook up his own phone to the chapel's sound system. So as Brett walked in the Tchaikovsky violin concerto was playing, and Brett looked at him, surprised, his eyes full of emotion.
He walked slowly, in time to the music's quavers, and Eddy couldn't help himself as he watched the love of his life approaching, looking so handsome in his black suit: the tears spilled over and ran down his cheeks.
When Brett made it down the isle to join him, he took both his hands in his own and like that they stood, beaming at each other. Brett lifted his hand for a moment, and sweetly wiped away a stray tear on Eddy's face.
¨Nice music¨, he whispered.
¨We are gathered here today to join in holy matrimony, Brett Yang and Eddy Chen¨, the officiant started. ¨I believe you have written your own vows?¨
Eddy had memorised his vows, so he could look Brett in the eyes as he recited them. He swallowed once, before he started, willing his voice under control.
¨Brett, my love, love of my life. You were my best friend for so many years, and now you're that and much more. I promise to love you every day of my life. I promise to be honest to you, to stand by you and support you in everything you choose to do. I promise to be there through the good and the bad, as long as I live.¨
He could hear Sophie, sniffling from the front row, as he saw Brett looking at him with so much love, it took his breath away.
¨My Eddy¨, Brett began, his voice soft but clear, his eyes jubulant. ¨I've loved you forever, and now it turns out you love me back, and that makes me the happiest man in the world. I promise to be your support, your protection, the one to stand by you through life's ups and downs. I will never leave you or let you down. You're my world, and I'll spend my life showing that to you. I'll love you more every day of my life.¨
The officiant smiled at them then, and spoke the magic words.
¨Then, by the power invested in me by the state of Nevada, I now pronounce you: husband and husband. You may now kiss to seal this bond!¨
Eddy leant forward, and kissed the love of his life. As their lips softly closed on each other he felt the weight of the moment. It was Brett and him, forever, just like it was supposed to be.
