Brisbane: lines

Eddy was still staring at the two lines in disbelief, when he heard Belle lose it slightly next to him. Her breathing was suddenly very fast, and when he turned to her she'd clamped both her hands over her mouth, her eyes as wide as he'd ever seen them. 
¨Oh my God!¨ she said softly, between rapid breaths. ¨Oh my God!¨
¨Hey! Hey!¨ he said, his voice at once soothing, as he put his arms around her and pulled her to his chest. ¨You okay?¨
He breathed deeply with her, whispering soft words in her ear. 
¨It's okay. You're okay. Hey, it's all good.¨
Slowly her breathing calmed, and then she looked at him with her wide eyes. 
¨Oh my God Eddy, this is actually happening.¨ Her voice was just a whisper, but it was full of emotion. 
He nodded, trying to keep himself together.
¨Yeah...¨ he whispered. ¨You okay?¨
She seemed to consider that for a moment, and as she did the panic left her eyes. 
¨Yeah.¨ she said then, and suddenly that resolve was back. ¨I am. You?¨
Eddy looked at Brett then, who was still frozen, staring at the pregnancy test. 
¨Hey.¨ he whispered again, taking Brett's hand in both of his own, stroking the back of his hand with his fingers. ¨You good?¨
Eddy would never forget the look on Brett's face when he turned slightly to face him. There was so much wonder in his eyes, and although he was very pale, Eddy had never seen him look this happy in his life. It was a happiness that seemed to come from deep within, pouring out of his eyes, pouring out of all of his pores. 
Brett swallowed and then found his voice. 
¨I'm not lying if I say I've never been better, Eddy.¨
Suddenly Brett pulled his hand out of Eddy's and walked the step over to Belle, enveloping her in both his arms, pulling her close. 
¨Belle, I will never be able to tell you how grateful I am.¨ he whispered, so soft that Eddy could barely hear it. 
Belle let herself be held for a moment, before stepping back slightly, her normal ironic smile back on her face now. 
¨Yeah yeah. Wait until the pregnancy hormones kick in and you both start hating my guts.¨
Eddy smiled. ¨Definitely not going to happen, sis. We'll be there with you every step of the way.¨
¨I know¨, she said, her eyes soft. ¨Just for the record, guys, I'm also really happy.¨
She was quiet for a moment, and Eddy knew she was looking for words, so he waited. Brett seemed to have given up on talking altogether. 
¨You know what?¨ she said then, ¨I know I said I never wanted to be pregnant, but now that I am...¨ suddenly she stopped and she giggled.
¨Oh my God. I'm pregnant!¨ She shook her head in amazement and then she carried on, her voice softer now. 
¨Anyway. Now that I am... it's cool. It's like, I'm going to do this thing that I was biologically made to do. And I'm going to know what that's like. I'm really happy about that.¨
She looked Eddy right in the eyes, her face so earnest, and his heart swelled up with love. 
He just nodded, and hugged her once again. 
¨Anyway!¨ Belle said then. ¨I am  going to head off now. You guys can get to your senses, and I know you have filming to do as well. So toodles. I'll call a midwife and let you know when the first appointment is.¨
And just like that, no-nonse Belle was back and in control. Wow. He really did have the most awesome sister. 
He saw her out, hugging her one more time, and then he turned back to Brett, who was still standing by the pregnancy test with that look of wonder on his face. 
¨We're pregnant, Brett.¨ he said. ¨We really are.¨
Brett nodded, his face an explosion of joy. 
Eddy grinned.
¨Do you think you'll ever start speaking again?¨
Brett nodded, but he didn't say anything. Instead he wrapped his arms around Eddy and buried his face in his chest. 
Eddy breathed deeply. And as he rested his own head on top of his husband's, for the first time since the lines had appeared he stopped thinking about the others and he could feel the joy and the relief in himself. 
Wow. They were going to have a baby.
