Part 39-Unnecessary Use of Force

I have to thank the lovely Ga1903 on ao3 for this idea. Enjoy y'all, and happy Thanksgiving!

It wasn't often that Viggo allowed others to sit in his main rooms while he went over reports. But today Ryker sat on the other side of his table, quietly adding figures from a description of dragon colonies in the western islands. It was good for him to be focused on something for awhile; Ryker's area of the ship had suffered a huge spider outbreak last night, and Ryker had spent hours clearing the insects from his rooms. Ryker hated spiders.

Needless to say, he was still a little twitchy. Viggo himself was still puzzled over where the spiders had come from, but he was now assuming that they had been hidden in some of their food storage areas and had simply been missed when his men did inspections.

A tiny movement on the table suddenly caught Viggo's eye. Oh, great.

A spider sat on the corner of a paper, next to Ryker's unbelted battle hammer. "Ryker, don't be alarmed, but-"

Then Viggo saw another. And another. And another... he quickly picked up his thankfully empty drinking glass, hoping to gather the spiders before Ryker panicked.

But it was too late for that. As soon as Ryker saw the spiders his eyes widened in panic. Before Viggo could stop him, he grabbed his hammer and swung it at the spider closest to his brother.

The spider moved. Viggo's arm, however, did not, and Ryker's hammer slammed down right on top of it.

Some time later, Viggo was getting his arm splinted by Ola. The healer had exasperation written in every inch of her body. "Well boys, I think this is officially the dumbest reason why I have ever patched one of you up."

Ryker sat off to the side, looking sheepish. "I know it wasn't the best reaction-

Ola snorted. "A war hammer. A war hammer! You're both lucky that it was a relatively clean break. But seriously, how many broken bones will I have to fix before you two start being more careful?"

"Why are you yelling at me? I'm not the one who grabbed the hammer." Viggo grumbled. He wasn't mad at Ryker, but the walk to Ola's quarters hadn't exactly been fun. He was just tired, and frustrated that he wouldn't be able to use that arm for awhile.

Ola tugged the last of the bandages tighter and tied them off to finish the splint. "Well, honestly? It's just easier to chastise both of you at once so next time I just have to glare and you'll know what I mean. I swear, you'll probably come in covered in mud and blood within a week of this splint coming off."

Viggo shrugged. "Yeah, probably. Come on Ryker, we have to go feed the deadly nadders. Watch out for their spines this time okay?"

They left, and Ola groaned into her hands before clearing away her supplies for the night. Those idiots... She smiled to herself and shook her head before leaving out some antivenom vials- just in case.

She may be tired, she might be frustrated, but Ola would rather die than not be there when the Grimborn brothers needed her.
