We sat in the car laughing again. We had arrived at Nonnatus over 15 minutes ago. But I hadn't the heart to leave the car and tear myself away from our lovely conversation.
"You should probably get inside" Timothy said breaking our laughter.
"Probably" I said.
"Until tomorrow" he smiled.
"Yes until tomorrow" I smiled at him.
"That can be our way of saying goodbye without actually saying it, saying goodbye is so sad" he said.
"I couldn't agree more so for now until tomorrow" I smiled at him.
"Until tomorrow" he smiled back at me. I climbed out of the car grabbing my bag off the backseat and made my way inside the ancient building. I closed the door as quietly as I could but sister Evangelina had been waiting up for me.
"What time do you call this sister?" She asked folding her arms over her chest.
"I'm sorry sister, late delivery I'm afraid" I said sheepishly.
"You were outside for 30 minutes" she said hiding the anger in her voice.
"I'm sorry sister the doctor and I were discussing patients" I lied.
"That so?" She asked not believing me.
"Yes sister" I said looking at the ground.
"You know a smart woman once said it is time to be brave" she said storming off huffing.
"What does that mean sister?" I asked as she continued to walk upstairs ignoring my question. I soon followed and headed to bed. It had been a very long day and I needed to rest. Barbra was fast asleep probably dreaming about the vicar Tom Hereward. I took the book from beside my bed and opened it. The picture of the child falling out of it again.
"One day I will return to find you and we shall be together but for now God has kept us separate to protect our future together" I said to myself quietly and gently placed a kiss to the child's head, returning the photograph to its place in the book. I placed it back on its shelf and got ready for bed whispering goodnight to Timothy even though he was far away.
"Until tomorrow"
