"So all I have to do is swirl the snow around a little bit over the grave and both me and Lucas can go back to camp?" Kai asked. It almost felt too easy. Though she got the feeling that whatever the snow did was more than the Divons were claiming.
There was no way they would go to great lengths to kidnap her and Lucas just to force her to move snow around someone's grave."That's all you need to do." Morgana sneered, popping her wand against the tip of her lip.
Kai turned back towards the grave and knelt down beside it, flicking her wrist to send the snow covering the engraved name off.
There was no name, only a symbol.
A symbol of a snowflake she recognized but couldn't place.
As she touched the symbol, blue light swirled around her, carrying snowflakes within it in a light drizzle.
She stole a glance over her shoulder at the Divon siblings.
Morgana's eyes gleamed with excitement, though when Kai locked eyes with Trevor, he seemed to be scared, and he shook his head slightly.
Kai turned around before Morgana could see her confused expression.
Was Trevor warning her to not do whatever it was Morgana wanted?
If even he didn't want Kai to do what she was being forced, then how bad exactly was what she was doing.
Then it clicked.
She knew where she'd seen that snowflake symbol before.
It was the day she had been claimed by three gods.
The snowflake symbol was the one belonging to the goddess Khoine.
The still-reforming-in-tartarus goddess of the snow.
Her grandmother.
Kai shot another look at Trevor, who subtly shook his head again.
Don't do it. His eyes screamed at her.
This time, Dani shook her own head as well.Suddenly, a crack split through the air and Trevor, who was still holding Lucas, apparated, disappearing from the scene with the unconscious son of Apollo.
Kai whirled her whole self around and stood up in one swift motion, stepping so that she looked down on Morgana threateningly.
"Where did he take him?" She hissed, holding a finger pointed at Morgana's throat.
Ice curled around her finger, forming a long and sharp point pressed against her neck.Morgana just laughed like a maniac. "You fool. You already did it." She pointed to a swirling maelstrom of a blizzard over the grave.
Kai felt a tug in her gut as she realized the whirlwind mimicked the flops her emotions were going through.
She tried to pull away from it, to stop herself, but it was like an uncontrollable sled going down a slope heading for a road, no matter how she tried, she couldn't pull her energy out of the blizzard. It sucked away at her, making Kai fall to her knees.
She gritted her teeth and screamed in agony as she pulled against the force."Little child. Do not resist me." A chill shivered across Kai's spine, like a tremor of bad memories, thoughts, or feelings.
The similarities to her own mother's voice was uncanny.
Khoine stilled the winds with a snap of her white fingers as she lowered from the air.
Her long ebony hair hung stiff like ice sickles and her white snowflake dress was so pure it was nearly blinding.
Kai tried to move, but it was as if lead had sunken into her bones or, the more likely presumption, someone else was controlling her own body.
Khoine knelt down to Kai's eye level and tipped her chin up, purring.
"You're only doing what you were created too.""How do we find them before Kai can wake Khoine?" Loki asked as they ran to the barracks of camp to put on celestial bronze armor.
Annabeth shook her head, running through all the ways she could think of how this would turn out. She didn't like the less than lovely odds.
And none of them lead them the way they would need to go to find Kai.As they ran, more campers began to catch sight, following them. They didn't ask questions, but they knew whenever Annabeth was running, they should follow unless they wanted to die.
"I don't know." Annabeth finally replied as she, Loki, Nico, Will, Issac, and Londyn burst through the barrack doors.
"We have no lead to where they could be, and we don't have time to brew up a truth potion to try to find the demigod who let the Divons into camp. If I know Morgana like I think I do, even if we found the demigod who let them inside, she probably didn't tell them where she would be going after she came in.
"The best we can do is prepare the camp for the worst."The mood inside the barracks turned grim, even from those who had no idea what was going on and just started to run with them because they were used to something bad happening in a blink of an eye.
Lucas coughed as he sat up, the cold air rushed out of his lungs mixing with the sudden warm moisture in which hung in the air.
He had been semiconscious a couple of seconds ago when he had been in some sort of snowstorm, and he had heard Kai's voice, which had made him stir.
But by the time he moved, he was apparated somewhere else.
He tore the blindfold off of his eyes and blinked hard.
He was sitting in a cave, but not just any cave, the same caverns where he was claimed by Apollo.
Kai's cave.
Trevor was there, though he squatted with his hands on his forehead like he was trying to squeeze out a headache.
"Ummm . . ." Lucas ventured, hesitantly rising from the mass of pillows he was laid upon.
Trevor's head snapped up and his eyes flickered from amber to his normal blue.
"Shhhhh . . ." He hissed. It was then when Lucas realized Trevor was trying to block whomever was trying to control his mind. And if the person gained control for even a second, then they would know Trevor had taken Lucas somewhere he wasn't supposed to, or that is what he assumed.
Lucas placed his hands on Trevor's forehead, moving his hands underneath his.
Golden light erupted, forming curling strings that flew through the air.
Lucas shut his eyes, sending his mind into Trevor's as his fingers found a mental strand, like an invisible string that existed in the realm of thoughts.
It felt like an injury he needed to fix.He was shocked when he first pulled on it, electricity hummed as it protected the thin connection between Trevor's mind and something else.
He imagined his hands glowing, forming a pair of scissors that snapped the connection like it was the source of a bad infection.
He stumbled back, landing on his butt hard, blinking his eyes open.
Lucas was almost crushed when Trevor wrapped his arms around him.
"Thank you." He whispered. "You did it, I'm free."
