Emily's Pov

"So when and how exactly did you hear him say all those things?" Val asked as we kept jogging at the same speed we have been running the past twenty minutes.

"When we got back from the amusement park the other day, I called him to know if he wanted to go out the following day. He came up with this story that he was going to the studio to help some couple practice for some dance competition. When I was about to end the call after we said our goodbyes, I heard him talk again. I thought he was talking to me, so I held the phone against my ear, and it was then that I heard him say all those things," I sighed.

"Oh, Em. I'm so sorry," she said in a sincere tone. I couldn't help but chuckle slightly.

"Don't be." I told her as we took a seat on a park bench. "I honestly don't even know why I dated him in the first place," I said as I turned the cap off of my water bottle and took a long sip.

"Well, now that you're single and ready to mingle," she stated, and I immediately started coughing.

"No way. I'm not dating anytime soon," I said sternly as I shook my head.

"If you said so," she said in a sing-song voice.

"What's that supposed to mean?" I asked as I quirked an eyebrow at her.

"I've seen the way you and Luke are together, Em. It's so obvious that you two are still in love."

"No, nope. We are just friends," I said sternly as I got up from the bench. "Now come on, we still have four miles to go."

"Emily," she whined as I grabbed her hand and pulled her off of the bench. "Can't we go and eat something? I'm starving," she pleaded as she fluttered her eyes and poked out her bottom lip in a pout.

"Fine," I groaned as I watch as a smile appears on her face. "Where do you wanna go?" I asked as I look around us at the small ice-cream shops and diners.

"How 'bout Benny's Pizzeria?" She asked as her eyes light up. I nodded my head, and she jumped up and down like a little kid.

"Calm down, Val," I said as we started walking towards the pizzeria.

"Good afternoon, ladies. Can I get you something to drink?" A guy probably in his late teens asked as he looked at both Val and me.

"I would like a Coke, please," I said as I gave him a friendly smile. He nodded his head and quickly jotted down my order before getting Val's and then leaving to fetch our drinks.

"So," Val started as she leaned forward and rested her elbows on the table, her chin laying in the palms of her hands. "Do you like Luke?" She asked as she wiggled her eyebrows at me.

"No, Valerie. We're just friends," I stated. She huffed and shook her head.

"Yeah, but do you think he wants to be just friends?" She asked, and I just shrugged my shoulders. "Have you seen the way the guy looks at you?" She asked. I shook my head. "He looks at you like you're the only girl in the world. He looks at you like you're the most precious creature ever to walk the earth."

"So now I'm a creature?" I asked jokingly as I raised my eyebrows at her.

"You know what I mean, Emily," she groaned. "Just think about giving the guy a shot," she said just as our drinks arrived. Val and I quickly ordered our food and continued talking about random things.

--------------------------

"So, what are you doing tonight?" Val asked as we stepped into my house. She instantly walked into my living room and flopped down on the couch, spreading her legs out.

"Nothing. I was thinking about taking a long, hot bath and then going to bed," I said honestly as I took a seat on the love seat.

"Screw sleeping. We are all meeting up at Luke's tonight, and you are going," she stated as she pointed the finger at me.

"You are annoying. You know that, right?" I asked as I leaned back on the seat.

"Of course, but that's why you love me," she grinned.

"Uh-huh, sure," I said sarcastically as I smirked at her reaction.

"What kind of friend treats her best friend the way you do?" She asked as she placed her hand on her chest.

"A good one," I replied sharply, causing her to roll her eyes.

"You do remember where Luke lives, right?" She asked. I shrugged my shoulders.

"Not really," I replied.

"Alright, I guess Kyle and I would have to come to pick you up."

"You say it like it's too much of a problem," I said, and she just stared at me.

"Not at all," she replied sarcastically, and I playfully glared at her. "I'm just kidding, but we'll come and get you around six," she said as she got off of the couch. "I'll see ya later," she exclaimed from the doorway.

How did I end up with a best friend like her?
