We drove for what seemed like hours before arriving at the towers… he did listen then. Once the car had come to a halt, I let out a relieved breathe but it seems… I only made him worry.
“We could have stopped if it was too much ya know?” he said raising a brow, hinting at a smile on those soft lips, he was the aspect of perfection to me “what?” he interrupted, snapping me back to earth.
“ Nothing… I’m just… well”
“Glad nothing happened” he murmured leaning closer to me.
“Yeah… I guess…” I looked down and turned toward the door before grabbing the metallic handle and letting myself out, once out I breathed in the fresh, salty air allowing it to flow effortlessly through my lungs, letting my eyes and body to relax before reaching high up and stretching also letting out the biggest sigh of relief “much better” I whispered before allowing myself to then take in the scenery around me.
Lots of multi-coloured dazzling lights were scattered up huge metal sculptures that towered over the small town below, high pitched laughter and screams echoed from the evermore busy rides with the occasional chant of “ugi-ugi-ugi!” before being almost instantaneously answered with “oi-oi-oi!” it was a regular pub chant that was normally associated with darts… but none the less it made me laugh and shake my head with amusement, I looked up to the tower and saw the famous lights change from purple to blue, yellow, green then back to purple almost in a blink of an eye ‘amazing…’ I thought to myself as I gazed totally amazed and if I listened hard enough… I swear I could hear the crashing of the waves…
“Jen are you ok” I didn’t even realise he had gotten out of the car yet… he had totally startled me “helloooo” he waved his hand in front of my eyes “anyone home?” I giggled at him and he grabbed my hand, taking me by total surprise before leading me over to one of the food counters “You hungry?” but before I even had time to answer he was talking to the man who was serving and asked for two bags of chips, a burger and two cans of Pepsi, the guy just grunted in response and got on with cooking the food, whilst we were waiting Leo decided it would be funny to mock the man in hopes of making me laugh
“Would you like salt and vinegar with your chips?” the man questioned with very little enthusiasm.
“Just salt” Leo stated before digging in his pockets for his wallet
“That’ll be £7.50” he grunted but looked pleasantly surprised when he saw Leo dig out a ten pound note “And here’s ya change… exactly £1.50…” Leo handed me my food and the Pepsi before fumbling the change into his pocket and swooping his food up.
“Thank you” I shyly said to him, not once wanting to stare up at his face for fear that I would start blushing.
“No big deal, its only money” he chuckled
“No… not that… for today in general, you may not care much but…” I decided to glance up at him as he just stopped dead in his tracks, the sight that I saw positively pulled at my heart, his chest was heaving up and down, his brow was lightly crinkled as his brow raised and his lips were pulled inward and tightened… I had managed to totally offend him, he grabbed my hand and led me over to the wall where he made me sit down whilst he hovered above me “don’t say that!” he bellowed, but I refused to look at him directly in the eyes “of course I care…”
“You barely know me” I stated defensively, shoving a chip in my mouth and chewing very slowly.
“That does not and will not mean I don’t care” he spat from his teeth, but he sighed and calmed himself down, placing the food down next to me he then decided to crouch down in front of me… just so that he could try to establish eye contact but when I didn’t give it to him he just sighed and continued “… if you think about it, don’t strangers make for the better company? That they listen to you more than someone you’ve known your whole life? … That they make better friends and better lovers?” He grabbed his burger “It just takes a while… that’s all… doesn’t mean that they don’t care… if anything they care more…” he bit into his burger then and I felt relieved, it was getting very tense and awkward.
“I suppose” and I fumbled for my phone again, I had completely forgotten to text my dad and let him know that I was going out; he must have been so worried! I quickly typed ‘out with friend, c u l8r’ making sure to add two X’s on the end of it, sending it then placing my phone back into my pocket.
“Something wrong?” Leo questioned whilst swirling a ball of burger in his mouth...
“No, just texting my dad… he worries” he just nodded before scoffing down more of his food and occasionally swigging his Pepsi, I glanced over to the sea… it wasn’t the blue sea that I had imagined, instead it was a black and grey curtain swishing and crashing against the hardened rock that dared to face the oceans wrath, looking back to my food I noticed I had barely eaten half… I wasn’t even that hungry, so I offered it to Leo who of course accepted it without any delay, whilst he scoffed down what was left and chugged the last of his drink I couldn’t help but smile… the kid had a very healthy appetite.
“Now that! Was a meal!” he belched as he rubbed his very toned stomach, before stretching and letting out an almighty yawn “forgive me, I’m quite the pig when I haven’t eaten in a while” I let out a very girly giggle, he was so sincere, so formal that it actually moved me
“It’s fine” I added with a smile, I pooped my can open and chugged it down as quick as I could allowing the brown liquid to cool my throat whilst the bubbles tickled the sides, once I finished I held my finger up to Leo to silence him whilst I placed my other hand on my chest before letting out a beast of a belch “Forgive me, I can be a swine when I’m thirst” I raised my eyebrow, mocking him whilst he smiled at me before reaching for my hand, caressing it then using his other hand to pull me towards him, my heart beat accelerated, my palms and forehead became increasingly sweaty and I was finding it very hard to keep eye contact… or for that matter, look at him at all, We became almost chest to chest… forehead to forehead, I turned my head to the side which was facing the ocean and allowed myself to lean against him, not sure of what else to do.
“Oh Jen… you’re so afraid, so fragile at the moment…” I kept silent, but his one hand just rose from my hips up to the top of my back, gently rubbing it as if I were a child, I pulled back slightly to just… stare into those eyes, hope for an answer of some kind… but as I stared I noticed that those eyes were filled with a burning passion… it was scaring me a little.
“We should go…” I whispered “…It’s getting late” he just smiled and ever so slowly he let me go before taking my hand and walking me back to the car
“Next time we come here… we’re going on one of the rides”
“Sure”
