Upon arriving at my house I was hit with a wave of nerves… my father was really going to rip into me. I hadn’t really talked to him lately, it was more a chance encounter now and again… we were like strangers now… like two room-mates sharing a flat that only met to give rent… it was depressing really. I told Leo to come back later like he normally did, gave him a quick kiss before walking up to my house. My heart was in my throat as I thought of how angry my father must be, not to mention how worried, my hand trembled as I reached for the handle, and I pulled it down gently… poking my head around the corner I saw that the kitchen light was peeping around the cracks of the kitchen door. I waltzed on in and shut the door ever so quietly and carefully as to not alert my dad to my presence.

“Jen?” ‘SHIT’ I thought

“Yeah…”

“So you’re home then” he sounded bitterly disappointed

“Yeah, I’m sorry about not texting…” my hands were still on the handle, I closed my eyes… bracing myself for the lecture

“It’s ok, just come here for a second… feels like I haven’t seen you in months” he was clearly exhausted… why didn’t he just give in and go to bed? I grabbed my phone and looked at the time, it was 10:24pm I really thought it was later than that. I walked towards the kitchen with light, baby steps…was I going to get scolded once we were face to face? Why was I even afraid of him? I opened the door to the kitchen and saw my father sat at the table with a cup of tea in his hand, he looked calm yet tired.

“Please, sit down” so I grabbed the seat nearest to me and sat down “So… where have you been?”

“With my friend Leo, we went to the beach after college”

“Nice weather?”

“No, bloody freezing” I chuckled, but he did not respond to my friendly attitude

“Are you seeing this boy”

“Dad…”

“No, no… I was just curious” finally he cracked a smile

“…Urmm… well I think we might be” I looked at the table; my cheeks were probably scarlet now

“You should invite him round sometime… I’d love to meet him” I looked up at him and stared wide eyed “Jen, I haven’t seen you so happy in months… this boy is good for you, and if it he makes you happy… I’m happy”

“Thanks dad” I smiled

“Maybe now you can stop sneaking him in your room at night…”

“Wh-What… how did you…?” I stammered

“I’m not as naïve as you think I am my dear...” he let out a chuckle “When you gave me that arse excuse about the tele… I knew”

“Sorry...”

“What are you apologising for? I’m glad to see you happy for a change!” He had taken me completely off guard with this… and it made things a hell of a lot more complicated...

“Is it ok if he stays over tonight?”

“Sure, just make sure he brings a change of clothes… might be nice to have another man around here” he winked at me. I grabbed my phone from my pocket and began to text Leo… still a little more than confused

Hey, dad knows bowt you… if in room, get out, get changed, knock on door, I’ll let you in. Explain later

Sure n.p J be bowt ten mins’ he replied a few minutes later
