It's the new year, but how much will change?

"It's the new year, but how much will change?" Natalie asked herself over and over again. She despised the new year as every teacher you walk past asks "oooh what's your goal for this year?", why does it matter, people never stick to them anyway. The most common one is saving money, but who seriously does that these days, this is why we have so many young people working. Not because they want to, because they haven't got much choice.

As she walks across the mud blanket called a field on the way to her first day back, with her freshly dyed copper hair, orange eyeshadow and black eyeliner. She was feeling confident and she knew what she was doing with herself. A promise she made to herself was to listen to less depressing songs and be happier, on which she stuck too as she was listening to Justin Timberlake on the way at full blast. The start of last year wasn't great as a few days into the year her grandad died. It wasn't much of a shock to her as she'd prepared herself for it. Someone had to be the emotional sponge in the family, everyone was sad and it was her responsibility to keep it all together otherwise nothing would function properly, and a time like this, it needs to function properly.

She had her head held high and walked past someone who tried to rape her a year back, she didn't look down and give him the satisfaction of being in control. She looked up and said in a cheery voice with a glowy expression "Hey good morning, haven't seen you in a while, how was your holiday? I hope it was great because mine was" he stood at the top of the stairs and stared, she just walked past and swirled her hair over her shoulder as she looked over her shoulder and said, "see you around, happy new year Alex". She knew that today was going to be a good day and a good start of the day. Natalie had no idea where all this confidence came from, she went out the night before with her boyfriend and his friends, the night was filled with energy and excitement with not an ounce of stress to be seen; a night that was so simple but would never forget. She caught up with the friends she hadn't seen all holiday. All they did was laugh and hug and laugh and hug etc. When the bell went signalling that form was about to start, she waltzed in and was greeted by all her friends. Her teacher was going through what her resolutions were and the boring school reminders "always wear your lanyard" and all that.

The teacher asked whether anyone had any resolutions, everyone said no, apart from Natalie who raised her hand. She cleared her throat and said "Miss, I have a new years resolution. My New Years resolution... is to be more confident" she expressed boldly and smiled a small but sweet smile. Her teacher looked at her in awe and said: "I don't think I've ever been so proud of a New Years resolution ever, I love the attitudinal ones, they're so motivational".

That set her mood for the rest of the day. She had high hopes, no matter whether a teacher she didn't like was somehow still employed and had been moved to her period 1 lesson or the fact her sociology teacher sprung a test on her class without giving them a warning. She wasn't stressed, she was confident and happy. Happy that she had finally found her confidence and that she knew she was wanted by all the friends she had around her.

"It's the new year, but how much will change?"

No more self-doubt, not anymore and definitely not this year. If Natalie could stop self-harming for over a year and have a monster running around everywhere she goes.

She can do this.
