Crows

The common assumption about crows is that they symbolise death and live in a cemetery - but does anyone make any optimistic views about these creatures. This is where Lyra comes in. Lyra is a girl who is easily distracted by birds - she seems to love them. But not those cute little bouncy things that hop across your lawn or on a hedge, she prefers those birds that can be seen as dangerous and as scary looking. Crows are her favourite but she also admires the other types of birds such as eagles, hawks, falcons etc.

People believe that the fact that crows have black feathers and they all look alike is rather ominous, that their beady amber eyes are just waiting for you to die there and then. But Lyra believes that they are some of the most majestic and wonderous birds in existence. They stick together as a family, no different to how we do, but because they are scavengers people think that they're disgusting. There are plenty of people who aren't fortunate to have a roof over their heads or to be able to afford enough food, but yet we see them as the same.

Their wide, black wings keeping them airborne move in a circular motion which propels them forwards. She watched them fly in loops, circling for their prey so they can feed themselves and their babies. Lyra went to the cemetery over the road from her house and sat on a bench when a crow hopped in front of her, tilted its little head and squawked. She fed her a little bit of her sandwich, making the bird less restless. Lyra's oxymoronic "light of her life with the black feathers" hopped onto the bench next and flapped her dark angelic wings, Lyra held out her hand and gently stroked the birds head. Surprisingly the bird didn't fly away, she climbed upon Lyra's shoulder and just sat there, as happy as can be. To say that she has the capability to fly above everyone and everything, she looked as if she was on top of the world.

Lyra stood up to go home and expected the little crow to fly away when she did, but the little crow was still attached to her shoulder. So Lyra began to walk home with her new little friend who she decided to call "Estrella" (Spanish for star) and showed her around the house. But when Lyra's older sister came home, she took Estrella upstairs into the birdcage that was displayed in her room, locked it and put a blanket over it. Estrella made no noise what-so-ever, she was just silent as she knew there was a reason she was hidden. After Lyra's sister, Scarlett had finished talking to her, she revealed her new friend from under the blanket. "I'm going to make something for you Estrella" she said with a gleaming smile. She took out her craft box and wove together a little tag with a star on it, she attached it to Estrella's foot and made a matching one for herself. "This is so I can find you when you're outside flying about" and Estrella squawked as if she understood. So Lyra set her free and told her to stay safe.

From that day, every morning, evening and night, Estrella flew through the window and into the birdcage and just sat waiting for Lyra to come upstairs. After a few months, there was an accident, so when Estrella sat there waiting, Lyra wasn't there to come and see her.
