We just got off the plane landing in Doncaster and now Evelyn and I are trying to find our way out of the airport and into a taxi to live in the beautiful house my parents bought me while we are staying in Doncaster, going to the law school here, and working with our record label. The airport reeks of fast food and every corner we turn we see magazines, key chains, and water bottles. Finally we find our way out of the airport and breathe in fresh air. We flag down a taxi after futile attempts for ten minutes. The driver puts our luggage in the trunk and we slide in the backseat. I look in my phone for our new address and cannot find it. It's not in my memory either.
"Crap, Evelyn, we have a problem," I whisper.
"What?" she asks sleepily from jet lag.
"I forgot the address," I say softly.
"Just call your mom or dad," she says still half-asleep.
Great, a zombie Evelyn still comes up with better ideas than caffeine-fueled Callie. Why didn't I think of it earlier? I ring up my mom and tell her the situation. In reply she says she'll text me the address and hangs up. Oh, ever-loving mother, what would I do without you? A second later my phone beeps and sure enough, the forgotten address pops up on the screen. I tell the taxi driver the address and we roll off.
"Wow," Evelyn gasps, looking at the beautiful scenery around her.
"I know. I never thought Doncaster could be so beautiful," I add on.
We spend the rest of ride silent taking in our gorgeus surroundings. Finally we pull up to a grand mansion amid others just like it.
"Holy gosh, I never knew Mother and Father were so generous," I gasp.
Yes, although my father is a recent cashier-made-businessman who owns several upscale hotels around the world while my mother opened her own fashion line several months ago I was never spoiled. My parents are not the ones to be throwing money around on the streets.
We quickly get our bearings, though, when we hear the taxi driver asking us impatiently to pay. I slide my Amex out of my wallet and run it through the machine, waiting for the reciept. The taxi driver gives us our luggage and we are left, staring up at the house. I fiddle around in my purse for my keys and unlock the front door. Inside everything is golden and antique with a twist of modern in places. I run to the refrigerator to see if I need to go shopping. Sure enough the fridge is empty as well as everything else. I go back to the living room to find Evelyn snoring on the couch. "Whatever," I think to myself. "I'll just ask the neighbors where the closest supermarket is." I leave a note on the coffee table explaining where I am going and set the alarm to Stay mode. I run across our lawn and up the steps to our neighbor's doors. I ring the doorbell preparing myself for the worst...anything except what happens.
The door is opened a minute later by a tan young man with brown hair and blue eyes who looks vaguely familiar. I am in the middle of blowing a bubble with my gum when the door opens. Looking preoccupied on his phone he says "If you're the mailman I'll take the mail." He holds out his hand and I clear my throat.
"No, I'm actually not the mailman," I say quickly suppressing a laugh.
"Then who might you--" He cuts himself off by saying "Callie!" when he looks at me.
"Um, do I know you?" I reply unsure of who he is.
"It's me, Louis. Remember me?"
I mentally scan my head for any person with that name I know. It finally comes to me. He's the boy who I let down on the X Factora, the one who I remember with tears in his eyes.
"Louis!" I yell.
"Yeah, it's me," he says scanning me up and down like he did six years ago.
"Um, I was just wondering where the supermarket is because, you know, I just moved here and I really don't know where anything is and..." I ramble on. Callie, quit rambling. Why are you so nervous? It's not like you have a crush on him.
"Oh yeah, I can come with you and show you where it is," he says.
"Sure, that'd be great," I tell him.
