The temple.
Sebastian's men took all day to finally reveal the caved in entrance of the building.
River was so excited to be there, because that was all she always dreamed about. That was the kind of job she wanted to take and make a living out of.
"Careful where you step, little lady." A short man with a prominent mustache had told her. River nodded and proceeded behind Sebastian, holding a torch above her shoulder to lit the space.
"It shouldn't take us too long to reach the main chamber. If my studies are correct this hallway will turn a few times before we get there."
Sebastian spoke quietly as his fingers ran over the wall, checking some of the Inca writing on it, dusty and covered in cobwebs.
River was trying to follow, paying attention to the ground, holding her torch and writing notes on her phone at the same time.
"I'd put that away if I were you, missy." Another one of the expedition's men told her, looking her up and down.
There were five more people with them. River turned to look at them. Three of the men looked like they were locals, dressed in simple clothes. The other two were tall and built, wearing cargo pants and black t-shirts. They looked like mercenaries and she didn't like them one bit.
River sighed. "We got to be careful. This place can still have functioning traps." She stated.
The men laughed. "Professor, where did you find this piece of work? She really thinks there are gonna be traps after all those years?"
The shorter man snorted as he laughed. "If there were, we would be dead already." He added.
Sebastian glared at them. "Actually, Miss Carter is right. If I were you, I would watch my steps. We didn't find any trap yet because someone was here before us and triggered them already." He then explained, pointing at some large boulders on the ground and at the openings on the ceiling where they came from.
They turned a corner and Sebastian had to pull River back against his chest, preventing her from falling in a dark pitch.
"Careful." He said, holding her.
River caught her breath, found her balance and shone her torch over the edge to light the bottom. There were a bunch of sharp spikes made out of bamboo branches all lined up. In between some of them, there were some white objects she couldn't identify right away.
Then it hit her.
"Are those bones?" She asked.
"No fucking way." Said the taller man, shining his own light down there.
"It looks like they are indeed." Sebastian proclaimed with absolute calm before pointing at the right side of the pitch where was a small ledge which they could use to get to the other side.
"This way. Be careful." He directed them and went first, moving along the wall slowly to not lose balance. Then it was River's turn, and then the rest of the team.
As they proceeded in the tunnel a growing buzzing broke the silence.
"Put out your torches."
Sebastian motioned for everybody to stop and be quiet, but not everybody could do that. One of the locals, who was growing more nervous by the minute started flailing his torch around looking for the source of the noise. His torch was the only one still lit and he wouldn't hear the others telling him to calm down.
All of a sudden a huge cloud of bugs came from one of the cavity of the ceiling. Sebastian took River's hand and pulled her down to the ground, quickly covering her with his own body.
