Chapter XXV.

Trial and Error.
Part II

"I am so screwed."

River was trying really hard to not cry. She held her head in between her hands, looking at the ground outside the courtroom. 

The judge had called for a break.

"We will find something.  Anything. We will." Sebastian kept trying to reassure her, but Nicolae really couldn't believe him.

Charles had played all of his cards extremely well.

"River if you would let me, I could work with the judge." The vampire suggested.

"No. That would make it all a lie. I am tired of that!"
She walked away from them and went inside the women's restroom. She needed to be alone.

As she looked at herself in the mirror, tears made their appearance down her cheeks and she started crying.

She felt like she was going insane. She feared she would really end up in the psych ward.

One of the stalls opened and Samantha came out if it, she froze on the spot seeing River cry.

"Dammit." River cussed and turned on the faucet, splashing water on her face.

Samantha stood there, unable to speak.

"Jones we need to do something. The odds are not in our favour." Nicolae was really worried for the girl.

"I know." Was Sebastian's answer.

"Once we get back in, the judge is going to have River locked up. He has already made up his mind."

Sebastian got his phone out, trying to think. He dialed the detective's number.

"Evans, tell me you have something on the bastard." He roared into the phone.

Evans didn't bring good news.
"I have nothing Jones. Shit. I am sorry."

Sebastian growled in anger.
"Go over our witness list again, did everyone on it spoke?"

"Yes they did Sebastian.  I am sorry I..." Evans was going to apologize again but then he stopped talking.

"What?  What is it? " Sebastian was growing anxious now.

"Gregory E. Holmes hasn't shown up. Who the hell is this guy and why isn't he here?" Evans yelled at another officer. He couldn't remember right away who the man was.

"Shit." Sebastian looked at Nicolae who had intercepted the whole call with his powers.

"That's River's butler." Sebastian said into the phone.

Nicolae wasn't surprised.

Evans on the other end, dropped his jaw.  "I met the guy." Then he got quiet.

"Fuck. Fuck. Jones! I think Carter stopped Holmes so he wouldn't testify. The guy really cares about River, I heard him when I was there!"

Sebastian showed his teeth in anger.

Nicolae tried to think.
"We gotta get him in here, hold on." He tried porting at River's house but... he couldn't.

Someone had placed a barrier over the courthouse so that no teleportation could be used.

"Cornelius is blocking me. I cannot port myself out." He told Sebastian, worried.

Sebastian was trying to think. Evans said he was sending a car over,  but the officers weren't going to be fast enough.
