Chapter XVIII.

The strange disappearance of River Carter.

The first dose of the antidote went down easily.
River was trying to be though, but it was clear how much pain she was in.

After moving River to a guest bedroom, Nicolae explained to her how the antidote would affect her and that she couldn't possibly go home to go through the rest.

"You cannot face the recovery process on your own, River. It requires a healer to help you. "

"What can you do that I can't? You only gave me a sip of some medicine." She asked.

Nicolae shook his head.
"It doesn't work that way. You will need assistance. "

She got agitated.

Even if she didn't want to, she HAD to go back.

"I can't stay here. Thank you for all the help but I have to get back or..." She gritted her teeth and tried to sit up.

"Or what, River. Or he will kill you?" Sebastian just walked in the room, moving in front of her. "Because he got pretty close tonight."

"You don't understand. " She avoided his eyes and tried to pull herself up but her broken ribs didn't let her.

"You got that right. I do not understand. Explain me why would you go back there when you need to recover. Who is going to help you at home? Your dad?" Sebastian tried not to sound too aggressive. He was very worried.

"Just lay down. Please. You are in no condition of getting up right now." He put his pride aside and as Peter and Drogo approached Nicolae, Sebastian kneeled in front of her.

"I love you. I don't want to find a corpse next time I see you. Do you understand me?" His gentle hand touched her face where it wasn't bruised and forced River to look at him.

Her eyed filled up with tears and she nodded. "I love you too." She whispered back.

Sebastian touched her lips with his. "You are going to be okay. I promise. " He kissed her forehead. "But you have to rest and let Nicolae take care of you. "

River nodded and looked at Nicolae who smiled gently and nodded back, then moved closer.

"I think we may have found a way to justify your absence and keep your father on his toes." He said.

Sebastian arched a brow.
River seemed very interested.

"He is gonna shit his pants." Drogo said cheerfully.

Peter chuckled.

"Language, brother. " Nic scolded him, then explained himself.
"River Carter, you have just been kidnapped. "

Both River's and Sebastian's jaws dropped.

It was brilliant.

"We are going to pretend you were abducted right from your room, in the middle of the night." Said Peter. "We got it all figured out, me and Drogo will get to your house and plant a few fake clues."

Drogo nodded. "It was all my idea, by the way."

Sebastian got up. "This is perfect. Charles will do whatever we tell him to in order to keep the secret."

River was trying to piece the puzzle together. "This would be something he always feared." She stated. "He has always been paranoid about a similar scenario."
