Clarity.

"I promise you, Father, I will be back in an hour or less."
River was trying really hard to get her dad to let her go out of the house.

She had told Sebastian that she would meet him in the forest and then head to the Bartholy's Mansion together.

She was sure Charles wouldn't mind.

Was she wrong.

Her father now believed that River needed to surpass Jones and become more knowledgeable than the teacher.

Charles wanted River to excel.

It would have worked for sure if he pushed him to do his best.
His as, Charles' best.

River was in disbelief. It was a Friday evening, her dad always let her go to parties she came up with last minute, or some made up date with some made up rich girl. Always.

"Out of discussion, you have to prepare for the next expedition in two months." He wouldn't even listen to her.

"Yes, I will do that, but tonight I convinced this girl to go out. She is really rich. They all talk about her at school. "

She got up explaining.

"I said you need to study." He replied.

River needed to go.
"I really want to meet her." She got closer to her dad.

"I won't take no for an answer, Father. I worked really hard to-"

And then she didn't know what had just happened.

Caught by surprise by his temper, River ended up on her bed, her face had been struck by the back of Charles' hand.

She pushed him too far.

Her eyes stung with tears.

"DON'T YOU EVER SPEAK TO ME IN THAT TONE AGAIN, BOY." He yelled, towering over her.

River was shaking and looked at him in fear as he raised his hand and hit her again.

It wasn't enough to him.

"I am s-sorry. P-please stop!"

She tried to protect herself from his next slap but he decided to direct his blow in her stomach.

River fell to the floor and curled up in a fetal position, holding her hurt stomach.

"STOP FUCKING CRYING YOU PUSSY. BE A MAN!"

He started kicking ar her legs, her arms and then, he hit her face.

He broke her nose with his boot.

It was only at the sight of the blood that he stopped and cussed.

"Get up. Go get clean. Now."

She was shaking, in shock, not even crying anymore.

As Charles moved to the door, River slowly dragged herself to her bathroom, where she tried to clean her face.

She couldn't feel pain yet, because of the shock.
But she was indeed shaking.

She lifted her gaze to the mirror.

Her reflection stared back at her.

She took her cellphone, looked at Sebastian's multiple texts.

I'm on my way.

She finally replied back.

That was the first time River Carter went against her father's orders.
