The Birth Certificate.

The events that followed the encounter with the detective, were chaos.

Evans did everything he could to uncover the truth,  just as he said.

Luckily for the case, he had an old buddy in the town of birth of River.

James Conrad, a retired officer, still had plenty of connections at the town hall and the birth archives.

That explained why he choose a Monday morning to go to the archives.

He knew he was going to be greeted by Karen. A widow in her sixties that always had a crush on him. It should have been an easy job, even if he didn't have an official request form to start searching.

But he owned Evans one, so...

James walked up to the woman and casually leaned against the counter, smiling charmingly.

"Good morning, Miss Karen. How are you this Monday?"

The woman felt a rush of heat to her cheeks as she heard a voice she dreamed many times about, calling her name.

"Detective Conrad, oh goodness gracious. Hello!" Ahe fluttered her lashes, fixing her hair.

James smiled again and looked her up and down, slowly.

"Just as beautiful as I remembered."

She giggled like a schoolgirl.

"Oh stop. How can I help you?"

The man cleared his throat.
"I'm working on a friend's case and he asked me to check on some birth certificates."

The woman eyed him for a second. He sounded sincere.

"Do you have the form?"

She asked.

He made a face. "I really don't.  I know..."

Karen sighed. "You know I could help you out ... at one condition."
"Dinner with me. Tomorrow?"

James thanked his luck. Dinner was something he could do. No problem.

"You got yourself a deal Karen."

She smiled happily and lead the cop into the archives.

"Who are we looking for?"

She asked, moving through the shelves.

"River E. Carter." He said as he headed towards the shelf with the year he needed.

"I see." Karen glanced a furtive look at the cop and moved to the other side of the shelf, so that she was right in front of him. Only the shelf separating them.

"I am gonna start here. This is the C." James said as he saw the lady do the same from the other side. Nice of her to help. He thought.

As her hands were hidden from his sight, Karen got her cellphone out for a minute, then started searching through the files.

James continued undisturbed,  browsing through the documents, reading all the names at the top of the papers.

After a while he got to the Carter last names and quickly jumped through them to get to River.
He found it and pulled it up.

"Got it." He told the woman.

The detective scanned the paper looking at the date of birth, name, and eventually the gender of the child.

Shit.

He thought.
It clearly said male on the paper.

River said her father changed her birth certificate.
Evans' text came up to his mind.
