' You mean commissioner Pine?'

Betty nodded as she cleaned the officer's hand.

' How did you get this nasty cut?'

' I was chasing a perpetrator when he jumped over the fence and I followed him. I did not realise there was a wire sticking out till it pierced my hand and cut me as I jumped off.'

' Did you catch him?'

' Yeah. I had too. It was his fault that I cut my hand so badly.'

' Well atleast you got your man. I'm  sorry.'

She apologized when the officer flinched when she bandaged her and checked if it was not to tight.

' Are you really the commissioner's wife?'

' Yes. Why is it surprising? Don't I look like her type?'

' No. It's just that she's been with us for a year and a half but we've never met you. I mean you've never been to any of our functions.'

' As a mother of four and a career woman myself. I unfortunately can't make every event.'

Betty lied. After she had her daughter's and gained weight, Nicole never wanted to be seen anywhere with her. When they met she was not thin but was not fat either. She had a big enough behind, thick thighs and a flat tummy but since her last pregnancy she had gained extra weight and a pouch. For seven years now she had been going to the gym religiously but there was no change. She was even on a strict diet but she was not losing enough to make her wife happy.

' I seriously would love to but I can't.'

The officer could sense a hint of hurt in her voice and did not say anything further.

' I have to go see another patient. I'll see you around.'

' You know we're having  get together two days from now at the police station. It would be nice for you to know the people your wife works with.'

' I am not sure but I'll try. '

' I'll keep a chair for you.'

Betty thanked her and walked away to attend to other patients till it was time for her tea break.

' What's with you and the officer from earlier?'

' She works with Nicole and has invited me to some event they are having down at the police station.'

' Are you going?'

' I'm considering it.'

She replied with a shrug of her shoulders.

' I thought you said Nico decided that it was better for you not to attend any of her work functions.'

' Yeah but I really want to see where she works and the people she works with. I mean at her old station,I knew every one and their partners. You kmow its hard being a police officer's wife but having people who understand what you're going through when you can't sleep because she's out there doing her job makes it so much more tolerable. I wonder everyday if she will make it home to us and I thank the powers above when she comes home. No matter what time it is.'

' I don't know what you're going through but in a way I can understand. The world is already a crazy place and worse for people who protect us.'
