"Okay, I'll try to talk to him."
When the boys arrived home, Zak immediately went to text Darryl. He unblocked his number and decided to keep it simple.
"Hey," he texted.
"Hey. Do you mind if we meet up later today?"
It was weird to Zak the idea that Darryl was taking the time to talk to him and still seemed so calm about it after everything that happened. Was he still mad? Zak had no idea.
"Okay- 3:15 at the coffee shop?" There was a small Mom & Pop coffee shop right across from their school, which generally wasn't very popular even at a time like 3:15, just after everyone was let out of school.
"Sounds good," Darryl replied.
The next day came and went until it was the end of school and time for Zak and Darryl to meet up. Vincent said his goodbyes as he parted ways with the Junior, telling him to call him if he needs anything. Zak smiled to Vince, but in reality, his stomach was turning in a nervous twist.
Zak walked across the busy road and into the shop. He froze when he saw Darryl sitting at a table by himself, practically staring into the soul of his coffee, deep in thought. He walked over and sat down across from him.
"Hi," the Junior said, not making eye contact.
"Hey." Darryl looked regretful. "I'm sorry. I'm really sorry. I said horrible things to you that no one should ever say to anybody."
Zak still didn't look up, simply trying to listen to the older's side of the story.
"I'm bi."
Zak looked at Darryl with an expression of some shock and some confusion. Now Darryl was the one looking down in shame.
"I kept denying my feelings and thought that maybe if I eliminated all gay people from my life that those thoughts would go away. But they didn't. So now I'm here apologizing, and asking if we could still be friends." Now they both looked deep into each other's eyes.
"Yes," Zak said, " I forgive you. And I hope we can be friends again."
"Well actually, I was wondering if maybe, we could be more than friends?"
Zak smiled slightly, knowing that the boy he had denied felling a for for years loved him back.
"I would enjoy that."
