Perhaps Darryl wasn't the only one who had a secret.
By the time seven o'clock rolled around, Ms. Kay was already back home.
"Hi, Ms. Kay!" Zak shouted enthusiastically.
"Why hello there honey-buns; how's your day goin'?" She asked in response.
"Pretty good, thanks!"
Then Darryl stumbled down the stairs, greeting his mother with a firm hug. She whispered something in his ear and he nodded a bit. Zak simply assumed it to be a quiet greeting.
Zak and Darryl head upstairs to Darryl's room to continue where they were playing some games on the senior's switch.
"Hey, Zak?"
"Yeah?"
"How did you figure out that you liked boys?" This was a bit of a tough question for the Junior, especially because it was a sensitive topic at the time.
"Well- when I looked at girls I just felt, like, afraid that they were going to judge me. But when I look at boys, I almost want them to judge me...want them to think I'm beautiful!"
"That's stupid." Darryl replied instantly. Zak was very shocked by the response, as he thought that the senior was fully accepting of his love- life. Zak paused the game and placed his controller on the floor.
"That doesn't even make any sense! How would you even know that you're gay yet!!? You haven't had sex with a man have you?!?!? What, are you gonna end up crushing on me next?! GET OUT OF MY FUCKING ROOM, GET OUT OF MY FUCKING HOUSE, AND GET OUT OF MY FUCKING SIGHT!! FUCK YOU, YOU STUPID FAGGOT!!"
Zak was horrified by his best friend's outburst, and he didn't know what to do. Tears were streaming down his face as he walked out of the house, grabbing his phone and running out as fast as his legs would carry him.
He ended up at the school playground for the preschool that was hosted in his high school he saw a tunnel structure and decided that there could be his temporary hideout for the night.
And there is where he slept.
