Flashback~
C O N N O R
"Happy 6th birthday!" Evan screamed excitedly as he walked over to me, lifting me in the air and spinning me around.
"Thank you!" I giggled at his actions.
Once he put me on the ground, my eyes caught a present wrapped in dark blue paper laying on my bed.
"Open it." He grinned, gesturing to the unknown object.
I glanced at him with my eyes open in curiosity.
"Come on. Open it."
As I unwrapped the present, I could feel my mouth hanging open and my eyes going wide with shock. It was an acoustic guitar. The same one I've wanted since I was 5 but Mom never got me because she doesn't want her 5-year-old son, strumming guitar to rock music in her house.
"Look, what I got you," Evan smirked.
"A guitar?" I whispered, still in shock.
"A guitar!" He repeated with a chuckle, ruffling my hair.
I picked up the guitar, staring at it in awe. I allowed my hands to run down each of the six, shiny black strings. The shape of the guitar was slightly thinner and less heavy than I had imagined, but it was perfect. The way the light brown wood contrasted with the black sides of the body and the neck of the guitar, only to be broken up by the knobs of silver, made it look even more amazing.
"But I don't know how to play," I mumbled, once I realized the facts.
"Don't worry, I'll teach you, but don't tell anyone." I grinned at him and nodded enthusiastically.
"You have a large one, right?" I asked, thinking about his guitar.
"Yes, kiddo! But this guitar is for tweens." He said, smiling, making my eyes go wide with excitement.
I jumped up and down, hugging him, while the grin never left my face.
"Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!" I squealed, hugging him tightly, once again.
"No problem. Do you like it?" He smiled.
"Yes! It's so cool! I LOVE it!"
He sat down on my bed, before rummaging through his pocket and pulling out the bags of candy. I smiled, running over and sitting next to him, once I saw a packet of sour patch kids in his hand.
"Do you want some?" He asked teasingly, a smirk painted on his face.
"Didn't you bring them to me?" I asked slowly, slightly confused.
"What if I didn't?" He said, his smirk only growing bigger.
"It's mine. You don't eat sour patch kids." I said, snatching the packet from his hand and sticking my tongue out at him. He laughed and handed me all the other candies.
"Guess what?" Evan asked as I devoured the packet of sour patch kids.
"What?" I asked, looking at him with curious eyes.
"What have you been waiting for days?" He frowned, slightly.
"What? Give me a clue."
"That Baby Singer-"
"Is Backpack out!?" I yelled, cutting him off.
"On your birthday!"
"Can I watch it!? Can I watch it!?" I couldn't stop smiling.
I was so excited about Justin Bieber's new music video. Evan always lets me know when any of his new music videos come out. He's literally my best friend.
"I see, why not!"
CONNOR
I was sitting on Evan's lap, wrapping my small arms around his neck.
"How's your school?" I asked.
"It's alright!" He answered, smiling at me.
A peaceful moment didn't last long between us. He called out my name out of the blue in a serious tone. "Connor?"
"Yeh?"
"Uh, do you miss your Dad?" I quickly shook my head, no doubt in my mind.
"Why not?"
"He left me with mom and took my brothers away with him, but not me," I said. "He hates me."
"He doesn't hate you. Who told you that?"
"Nobody told me that." I shook my head at him. "He has left me alone with Mom," I whispered, feeling hurt and rejected.
"He never wanted to leave you, but he doesn't have any option left, other than leaving you with your Mom."
"What do you mean?" I asked, raising my eyebrow at him in confusion.
"Never mind. You're not old enough to understand all this." He sighed.
A small pout formed on my face, as I sat there in confusion.
What does he mean, he never wanted to leave me? He must be lying. No matter how much he tells me, my Dad doesn't hate me, I know he does.
"Don't you like living with your Mom?" He asked, breaking the peaceful silence.
"I...like it?" I said, being unsure of my answer.
Do I really like living with Mom?
"You know, you can tell me anything, kiddo." He smiled, stroking my hair lovingly.
"Mom doesn't play with me as Dad used to and she doesn't even take me out to a restaurant or anywhere as Dad used to.." I felt tears pooled in my green eyes. "She doesn't even love me like Dad used to."
I sat like that for a while, with my arms around his neck while I felt his hand wiping my tears.
"Let's teach you guitar, yeah?"
A huge smile instantly appeared on my face.
