"Do you think I wasn't aware of what you did to him when I had been to Washington?" Dad rebuked; his blue eyes radiating outrage.
Maverick's face was suppressed with resentment, and he gritted his teeth from an effort to remain silent.
Once Dad is out of the house, I'm dead.
I can already feel the chills arising in my bones.
"Step out of the house and you'll face dire consequences." Dad blustered furiously.
"Why on the earth are you taking his side?"
"It's not about taking his side. It's about your actions."
I was surprised how Maverick has still the audacity in him to stand so confident and erect while scolding harshly. If I were in his place, I would have been on the floor by now due to panic.
Maverick didn't let himself stand back, he retorted. "Isn't that, since this jinx has arrived, I'm getting scolded for my activities all the time?"
"Two weeks has been added to your punishment for talking back."
"Like I would listen to you."
The tension in the surroundings became thicker, and I felt afraid of Dad as he seemed so close to losing his temper.
Maverick's gaze flickered at me causing me to flinch at the sight of his baleful glance.
I tried to whisper out. "Dad, it's okay."
"Not a single word from you, Connor." Dad scowled at me and spoke to me in a tone he has never used before.
He has never raised his voice at me.
"Of course, you'll make him feel how adequate he is. How his words carry a right to come into existence. How much of a precious child he is of yours." Maverick stated blindly, lacing a venom in his voice.
"Maverick, this is not--"
"Oh, shut up, Dad. Don't try to make excuses. I'm only stating what I have perceived."
"What problem have you got with him?"
"His existence is my problem."
On the spur of the moment, a loud sound was produced when the large hand of Dad cracked across my brother's face, making the living room fall silent. A few minutes passed by and all of my brothers' gape was still fixed on Dad as he had committed a crime.
"I have dealt enough of your disrespectful behavior, Maverick."
Maverick seethed, but his voice was full of distress. "You have got so changed. I hate you, Dad!"
Without further ado, he turned around with his face distorted pang and fury, and pushing past me, he made his way upstairs and to his room.
"Maverick--"
