"Let me guess I need to strip?" Liz asked after arriving at Deaton's.
"It is the only way I can examine you, so yes." Deaton replied professionally. I was personally against the idea of Liz undressing in front of Scott, Stiles and Deaton but she began to take her vests and shirt off.
Scott gasped while Stiles and me just squinted our eyes. Liz's rib cage stood out and the bottom three ribs were yellowish marked by the red and dark purple skin around it. You could literally count every bone she had. Her shoulders were boney and in between her neck and her left shoulder was a suspicious looking bump. Her arms were, other than some muscles, a bit thin and on her left forearm I could see a bone sticking out in a very disturbing way.
My eye fell on her right upper arm. Instead of finding an other injury, I saw an beautiful tattoo going around her entire arm. The top of the tattoo was just one continues line but the bottom gradually broke up into dots until the line disappeared.
Liz looked up to see my reaction and I could see that she was relieved when she saw that I was staring at her tattoo instead of her injuries.
"Oh god." Stiles said as he turned a bit pale at the sight of the bone moving around every time Liz moved her arm.
When she removed her shoes you could already see that she'd broken two toes on her right foot. The entire toe above the first joint stood in an complete different direction than the rest of the toe and looked really disturbing.
Liz managed to get her pants off after some trouble because of her left leg. Just above the knee, her leg was swollen and red. When Liz was done, she stood up straight and looked at Deaton, waiting for some sort of response or instructions.
"Okay. Have a seat." he said and pointed at the examination table. Liz easily jumped up while Stiles held back his food at the sight of her bones moving.
After a few seconds he'd already established that there were at least 8 bones that he would have to break. Liz nodded and grabbed the edge of the examination table.
Deaton started with her toes since they were the easiest. Stiles turned around and Scott just stared in horror. Liz didn't flinch when he broke her toes. The only thing she did was frown for just a second. Deaton expertly held her toe for the normal amount of time for her to heal and stood up to take a look at her arm. I saw that Liz tried to wiggle her toes to test them but she groaned out in pain, which caused everyone to look at her.
She tried it again but there was little to no movement in her toes.
"Maybe it hasn't healed yet?" I suggested when I saw Deaton thinking of reasons.
"Maybe." he said when he went back to her toes and inspected them. "You're right. They haven't."
"Why wouldn't it have healed yet?" Scott asked confused. "She's a werewolf. It should've healed, right?"
"There are multiple reasons why it would take a bit longer for her to heal. The most probable one right now would be malnutrition." Deaton explained after making sure that Liz's toes were healed. Liz tried to wiggle them again and it worked.
Deaton went on to her left arm and, without any warning, shoved it into place. For just a second Liz's eyes flashed blue but she quickly controlled herself.
"Oh god." Stiles said while looking really pale and he quickly turned around again.
Deaton double checked to see if it healed this time before he went on to the next part; Just above her knee. He stared at it for a couple of seconds, obviously deep in thoughts.
"I'm going to need to do the rest with surgery."
"Ah fuck." I heard Liz silently curse.
Deaton got the things he needed and told Liz to lie down. Stiles got ready to help but after seeing the scalpels Deaton would use to cut into Liz, he became slightly green and told us that he'd wait in the waiting room. Scott and I didn't back down and waited for Deaton to tell us what to do.
Deaton gave a syringe to Scott and prepared the rest of the tools. Scott, who obviously had done this before, leaned closer to Liz's neck and injected her. Liz just waited and her already sleepy eyes fell shut after a few minutes.
"I need you to hand me the tools," Deaton said to Scott "And you to keep the wound open with this." he said to me and handed me some sort of metal device. "The wound will heal before I can do anything if you won't."
I nodded and Deaton started the operation. The first place he cut open was her collarbone. The suspicious looking lump I'd seen earlier was actually an out of place piece of bone sticking out.
I did the best I could. I pushed any and every thought aside and made sure to keep the wound open. I could feel the tissue trying to grow back and repair itself but I wouldn't allow it.
After Deaton reached the bone, he expertly managed to get it together and watched as it slowly healed itself. I let go of the tool and after a minute it healed. Apart from the extensive amount of blood, it was as if nothing had happened.
Without any pause, we moved on to the next part; her left leg. Deaton repeated the process. It took a bit longer than the collarbone, mainly because of the difference in the amount of muscles in the leg and shoulder. After a while, Deaton reached the bone. I couldn't really focus on how he was doing because the amount of force behind Liz's healing leg was enough to keep me busy.
He somehow managed to fix that one as well and told me to let it go. It took Liz a couple of minutes to heal the leg wound but eventually that healed as well.
Deaton repeated basically the same pattern with her ribs. It was an easy wound for me to hold open but one glance at Deaton's face and you knew that his job wasn't as easy.
I could see what Deaton was trying to do. He was trying to lift the rib outwards so that it would nicely line up with the rest of the bone again. After a few tries he managed to get the bone into the right place and the healing process slowly started. By that time, Deaton's hands were covered in blood as well as Liz's skin. Her blood slowly dripped on the table and, because of the amount of blood on the table, dripped down to the ground.
Deaton sighed satisfied with his work and stepped back. I dropped the tool on the table and leaned against it.
"She'll wake up in 10 to 15 minutes." Deaton said after a few seconds "I would suggest to get her to the hospital for an x-ray anyway. Just to make sure we haven't missed anything."
I nodded as I kept my gaze on Liz's unconscious body. What could she have done to get it this bad? It must've happened in the last few days since the social worker didn't notice it.
"So what did I miss- Oh god." Stiles said after Scott informed him that we were done. He cringed at just the sight of Liz covered in blood and held himself up to the wall.
"So what do you think happened to her?" Scott asked after Stiles got himself together.
"I don't know." I answered truthfully "But I'll find out."
