Lydia Styles
My eyes flutter open, the morning sun barely filling the room through the windows.
I felt a little weird, as if there was something absent from the room. I reach around behind me, to see if I could feel Harry's body next to me, but all I felt were warm sheets.
He wasn't there.
Because I was just waking up, I was a little disoriented and confused. I grab my phone and check the time.
It's only five in the morning.
I swing my legs over the edge of the bed and throw my hair up into a quick ponytail. I haven't woken up this early since Daisy was just 2 months old. She's a really good and cooperative sleeper for the most part.
My legs quietly shuffle past Louis' and Niall's bedrooms so I don't wake them. I thought that Harry might've gone into Daisy's room because he might have heard her crying and I slept through it.
But, when I opened the door, I didn't see Harry. I approached Daisy's crib and my heart sort of stopped when I saw that she wasn't in it.
I furrow my brows, growing more and more worried because it's always a little bit concerning to find that your husband and child are missing from where they should be, especially in our case.
I quickly tiptoe to the stairs, trying to rush down them as silently as possible.
I heard the faint sound of the tv coming from the living room.
Quietly, I walk towards the sound. The only light filling the house came from the windows that didn't have the curtains drawn. It was that faint, morning sunlight.
I felt my tense shoulders relax and sighed a breath of relief when I entered the living room, because I looked over at the dining room table to see Daisy in her highchair and Harry with his shirtless back to me, feeding her spoonfuls of baby food.
I smile and lean against the wall, just admiring the sight for a moment.
I didn't go unseen for long, because Daisy quickly spotted me and a huge grin grew upon her face as she pointed and giggled.
It made Harry look over his shoulder and spot me as well.
He smirked. "Hi, baby." he said in a tired, morning voice.
"What are you two doing up so early?" I ask as I walk over to the both of them.
"I heard her crying in the monitor. I tried rocking her for a little bit but she refused to go down again." he says as he looks at her, scooping up more of the orange colored mashed food onto a small spoon and bringing it up to her mouth.
"Well she seems happy now." I chuckle as I stand behind Harry and rest my hands on his bare shoulders.
"Because she's eating." he laughs.
Her chubby cheeks lift as she smiles at us, revealing her dimples.
She got those from Harry. I love it.
"Are you happy, baby?" I ask her in a higher voice.
All she does is giggle at us, because of course, she can't talk yet. But I'll take it as a 'yes'.
Harry scoops the last couple of spoonfuls and feeds them to her before setting the bowl on the table next to us.
He stands up tall from the chair and reaches for Daisy's highchair.
I watch as he tickles her tummy a couple times, making her laugh before he lifts her out.
"Do you think she'll sleep for a couple more hours?" he asks.
I shake my head. "No, she's up for good." I say, causing Harry to groan a little bit as he looks back down at Daisy.
"You're lucky you're cute, you know that?"
She laughs once more, as if she could understand him.
"Let's just take her in our room and-"
Harry gets cut off by the a sudden volume spike from the tv, a woman's voice suddenly begins speaking, beginning with the words "Breaking News tonight..."
Both of our heads turn towards the tv in the living room. On the screen was a news broadcaster in a red pantsuit in front of some sort of building that I couldn't recognize right away.
"A shooting has occurred downtown at-"
She says the address, and my heart drops. I instantly recognized it as the diner I used to work at.
I walk closer to the tv to get a better look, and my fear was confirmed when I saw that the building behind the reporter was in fact my old diner, with police tape outside of it.
"Isn't that-" I hear Harry's voice trail off.
"Yeah, it is." I finish his thought.
"From what we know, a customer was shot while sitting in a booth by a man that had just entered the diner."
"Oh my god." I mumble.
"The victim was killed instantly. Police are looking for a tall male, supposedly dressed in all black."
Harry grabs the remote and shuts the tv off while holding Daisy on his hip. I snap my vision from the tv to him.
"Why'd you turn it off?" I ask with confusion.
"Because, you don't need to think about shit like that right now." he says.
"But, don't you think it's a little weird? That it happened in the diner I used to work at?"
He sighs and walks right up to me, putting his hand on my back. "I understand why you might be worried, Lyds. But this shit happens everyday, it doesn't mean it's connected to anything." he tries his best to comfort me.
I've tried to spend these past months not worrying. I find it hard not to be looking behind me constantly when Harry and I do simple tasks such as going to the grocery store. So, as much as I've tried not to worry, it's much easier said than done.
You never know who's out there.
Xavier and Harry's mother are still missing. out there somewhere. Harry killed Samuel, so I don't know what's going on with the Phantoms now that their leader has been murdered.
But, no one knows where this cabin is, and for the past eight months our lives here have been pretty quiet and peaceful.
The only thing disturbing the peace is my own thoughts. I could drive myself crazy thinking there's someone out there waiting to attack us...but Harry's the one who keeps me grounded.
So, he was right. The shooting was probably just a coincidence.
"I know, I'm sorry. It's just hard to keep thoughts like those out." I respond to Harry's words of reassurance.
He uses his free arm to pull me in closer for a hug, his arm wrapping around my body. My head rested on his warm, bare chest and he kissed the top of my head softly.
Daisy was just above eye level with me at this angle, and I look up at her. She put her small hand on my head on top of my hair, as if she was trying to comfort me just like Harry was.
I immediately felt so much better, having the two people I love most right here. All my worries went away and I didn't even think twice about the situation once the three of us were huddled together.
This is how I always want it to be.
