It's been a few weeks since Brock asked me to be his girlfriend. We've been spending a lot more time together recently.
For the past 3 weeks, the other girls on the team and I have been challenging each other, trying to claim a spot in the top 6 for our first match.
Our first match is on Monday, also know as the first day of school.
Now, we're all anxiously waiting to find out who will get to play. It was raining, so we were all huddled with out bags beneath the gazebo. It wasn't raining enough that we couldn't practice, just enough to be really annoying.
"Of course you'll make top six." Erika said to me as we awaited Coach Lacoy's return.
"Maybe..." I honestly couldn't tell. "But I bet you will too."
"Really? How much? I could really use the cash."
I couldn't tell if she was joking or not. Luckily I didn't have to answer. Coach had just crossed the parking lot with the rankings in his hand.
"Here is the line up for next week." He began to list off each player's name and grade. "Caitlin, senior. Kyrsten, freshman. Kaylie, junior. Ally, sophomore. Georgie, senior. Molly, freshman. Jessie, you're our first alternate. If anyone is sick or injured you'll play in their place, understood?" I nodded, and he continued. "These aren't permanent. Any days we don't have a match, you can challenge the player in the spot above you to try to move up."
Great. Just great. I thought. Molly is number 6 while I'm number 7. She's going to hold this over my head forever.
Just then, the light rain turned into water pounding against the cement. "Practice is cancelled for today! You're all free to go!" Coach Lacoy shouted over the heavy rain.
I texted Mom, since she was the closest at the time. She texted back saying she was on her way. We only live 5 minutes away.
Fifteen minutes later the other freshman and I were sitting under the gazebo with Coach, waiting for our rides. The other girls all had their driver's licenses, so they took off the minute we were dismissed.
"So..... how's everyone's day?" Erika asked, trying to make the silence between us less awkward. I kept my mouth shut in attempt to not argue with Molly.
I felt my phone vibrating in the pocket of my shorts. I saw the picture of my mom on the screen. I assumed she was going to tell me she was running late, if that wasn't clear already. Unfortunately, I was just about as far off as possible. "Hello?"
"Jessie?" She sounds scared. She never sounds scared.
"Mom? What's wrong?"
"I'm at the hospital."
"What?!" Okay, now I'm scared. "Are you okay?"
At this point, I heard her start to cry. "It's not me..... it's Roan."
