Adoption Certificate

Name: Jessica Rosalyn Sawyer

Adopted by: Kira Keene and Joe Keene

Day: 23     Month: January     Year: 2003

What.

The.

Fucking hell?!

I was adopted?!

I always joked about it, because I have pretty much nothing in common with anyone else in the family. But that doesn't mean I'm not utterly shocked.

"Hey Mom asked me to come help you." Roan said, running into the room. "What's that?.... woah...."

I couldn't move. They hid it from me for 14 years! Who are my real parents? Are they looking for me? What are they like? Who else knows?

I can't believe this. Roan's not my biological brother. I wonder if I have a biological brother... stop it Jess! First confront mom and Dad, then find your biological family.

I stood up, the entire folder in my hand, and started angrily making my way to the living room where I knew my parents would be.

When I walked in, I saw them sitting the same way as when they told Roan and I we were moving. I was curious, but my curiosity was weighed out by anger.

I slammed the documents down onto the coffee table. "Explain, please!" Even more pissed off than ever, I knew I'd be mad at myself later if I came off rude.

My parents told me the story of how they adopted me from a woman who lives somewhere down south. And the reason they had their "bad news faces" on was because Dad's company is transferring him to Richmond, Virginia. They said Dad will be leaving next week but the rest of us are staying until we can sell the house.

"Bye Dad!" A week later I waved, standing between Roan and Sadie as our dad pulled out of the driveway.

"See you in two weeks!" Roan called to him.

I left my brother and sisters on the porch and went back inside to my room. Sure I was upset that my dad was moving out but it's not like we'll never see him again. He worked it out so that he can visit every other weekend.

Besides, I had bigger things to worry about, like finding my birth parents. I've been looking through different websites and programs that help kids who were adopted or are in the foster program find their biological families and vice versa.

I told my friends about what I found and they were all really surprised. But they were nonetheless 100% supportive of me finding my birth parents.

Are they looking for me? Of course not they would have found me by now, right? For all I know they could be dead. These thoughts kept running through my mind as I typed in the website Julian texted me about.

Turns out, Julian's cousin was adopted and found his parents through this program.

You type in your name, date of birth, and the names of your adopted parents. Then, if anyone else put in the same information, they match you with them. If not, they send you a DNA kit and you can find out that way.

Name: Jessica Rosalyn Sawyer

DOB: 1/23/03

Adopted by: Kira Keene and Joe Keene

I watched the little wheel go around and around. "Ughhh we really need faster internet speed. Oh! Matching...... no matches found." I sighed. I really thought this one was going to work!

I typed in my address so that they could mail me my free DNA kit.

Cade's POV

"Dude it's been almost four years since Mom and Dad died." My twin brother lectured me. "Their will said that we have a younger sister who is Spencer's twin that they put up for adoption fourteen years ago. Now you're job is transferring us and all twelve of our younger brothers to North Carolina. How the hell are we ever going to find her? We've been looking for over three years! Spencer is totally freaked and he has good reason to be! He has a freaking twin sister that our stupid parents gave up!"

"Dallas!" I ended his rant. "We'll find her. We have to."

Jessie's POV

Wednesday, June 7, 2017

The last few months passed by pretty smoothly. Dad would come and visit and constantly fight with Mom. I've actually started to prefer him not being home. We continued to slowly pack up the house, Mom still hasn't sold it.

I'm almost finished with 8th grade now and while most of my classmates hate middle school, I'm gonna miss the hell out of it. We have two more days of classes, then Friday night we have our 8th grade formal, and then final exams start on Monday. After exams are over we graduate from middle school and I'll probably never come back here again.

I was standing outside the school with my friends waiting for the first bell to ring, telling us to go to class. We passed our yearbooks around, signing each other's.

"So we're all meeting at Jessie's house before the dance?" Dustin checked.

"Oh, I invited Brayden, by the way."

"Fine with me, he's hot." Declan spoke up. "Haha yes, Declan's gay. It's no secret. Besides, Jessie and Brayden going to formal together? The ship can finally sail!" He squealed.

My friends, along with our parents and Christian, have been trying to get Brayden and I together since literally the day I was born. I'm all for it, but I know how Brayden feels about me and it's not like that, so I always complain and act as if I don't like him.

As the first bell rang, Brittany handed me my yearbook and I started looking at what everyone wrote. The entire first two pages were almost filled.

"...You're like a sister to me. Who am I kidding? You are my sister...."

"...Imma miss the crap out of you Little J..."

"...Gonna miss sneaking into your math class..."

"...I love you sooooo much dude. More than I'll ever say to your face...."

"...good luck down in NC..."

"...Try not to replace us too fast LOL..."

"...Have a great summer Jess!..."

"...Love, Declan"

"...The one and only, Kyla"

"...Yours truly, Dustin"

"...Sincerely, Brittany"

"...Love ya, Julian (aka Big J ;))"

Wow. This is it huh? My last year with them. That is, if Mom ever sells the house.

At the end of the day, I started walking home with Declan as usual. With my house in sight, I started running as fast as I could.

"Race you!" I shouted over my shoulder. My bag was practically empty, since there were only two days of school left, making it extremely light.

"Aw no fair!" He yelled from behind me, but I couldn't hear him.

I stopped in my tracks as I reached the driveway. Our usual "For Sale" sign had been taken away, and in its place, a sign that read "SOLD".
