"It's not me..... it's Roan. We were... o-on.. our way to c-come get you...." I could barely understand anything through all the sniffling and crying.
"Mom, just calm down. I'll meet you there."
As soon as I got off the phone, I called the first Sawyer boy in my contacts list. Well, technically second. I felt bad for always using Adam.
Ten minutes later, I had explained to my coach what was going on and Cade was arriving to pick me up.
Another 20 minutes had gone by before we got to the hospital.
Cade and I both rushed into the ER building. He's a lot bigger than I am so he reached the front desk way before I did.
"Excuse me, we're here to see Roan Keene." Cade said to the lady at the desk.
"I'm sorry sir, family only."
"I'm his sister and this is my brother." I told her as quickly as possible. I technically didn't lie, just didn't include any detail.
"He's in room 112, though no one is allowed to see him at the moment."
I grabbed Cade's wrist and dragged him behind me through the double doors. The second we rounded the corner, I spot Mom pacing back and forth across the hallway. She was the only other person in sight.
"Mom!" I hurried over to her and grabbed her shoulders, facing her towards me. "Are you okay? What happened? How's Roan? Where are Sadie and Raven?"
I could tell how stressed she was and, looking back, I really wasn't helping at the moment.
"I'm fine, I'm fine. I asked Dallas to keep an eye on your sisters...... We were on our way to come get you..... It was raining... pouring, really." She paused and looked up at me solemnly. "I turned too fast.... and the car slid off the road, into a ditch...."
A/N: Just real quick, wanted to say that in North Carolina and other states where there is a lot of rain and hurricanes, the roads are lined with ditches, so there is little to no shoulder to the road.
"Oh my gosh." I fell back into a chair against the wall. "What did the doctor say?"
"He hasn't come out yet. They've been in there for nearly an hour now." She came and sat down in the waiting chair next to me, and soon Cade came to sit on the other side of myself.
Another 40 minutes or so passed of us fidgeting out in the hallway, anxiously awaiting the doctor to come talk to us. I texted Brock, Spencer, Erika, and some friends and family back in New York to update them with our... current situation. Spencer and Brock are both on their way now.
The doctor finally stepped out from the operating room and the three of us bolted upright. Less than a second later, I see both Brock and Spencer rounding the corner.
Cade was the first to speak. "What's the verdict, Doc? Is it bad?"
"I'm sorry but..... I don't think he is going to make it..... I think you should all go and say your goodbyes."
I couldn't believe my ears. He's too young! He hasn't even started middle school yet!
The 5 of us herded into the hospital room. Roan was hooked up to a bunch of wires, and had an IV in his arm.
"He looks so helpless." I whispered. It's true. I couldn't believe how small and helpless my 11 year old genius of a brother looked at that moment.
"C'mon dude, you gotta push through this." I could here Spencer say quietly from across the room.
The room was dead silent other than the beeping of Ronan's monitor.
Brock stood behind me. One arm wrapped around my shoulders, the other hand laced with my own.
Cade and Spencer said a few words to my little brother's limp body before slipping back into the hallway. It was just Mom, Brock and me left with Roan.
I look across at my mom, the woman who raised me, and see the tears flowing down her face. Once I see her crying, I guess I realized it was okay, and began to cry myself.
"My only son....." Mom kneeled down next to Roan and took his hand in hers. "I need you to get better...... Get better for me, for your sisters, your father, your friends...." She stood back up and wiped the tears from her cheeks. "I need a minute." She hurried over to the door and into the hallway.
"I don't really know what to say to him...." I turned my head to face Brock.
"Just say what you're thinking." He gave my hand a light squeeze and I turned back to Roan.
"Remember that time when Mom told us she loved snow, but hated the cold weather......" I started to smile, thinking back at the fond memory. "We stayed up practically the whole night making paper snowflakes and hanging them all over the house.
"I don't know what I would do without you, Ro. You need to wake up. Come home. Make more paper snowflakes. Go to school, join the band, make some new friends!" I was balling like a baby at this point. "Please...... please..."
