The bell rang just as I walked into my World History class. And who's the teacher? Coach Lacoy.
He smiled. "Ah, Jessie. I noticed you were in this class on the first day. Where have you been? You've missed three days of class, and our first three matches." His smile turned serious too soon.
I couldn't think of anything that wouldn't get me kicked off the team except for the truth. "I, um, had a funeral to go to."
"Oh. Then I'm sorry for your loss." He kept a straight face, but I could see the pity in his eyes. I hate pity.
"Thanks. Can I have the work I missed?" I looked at him expectantly.
He picked up a stack of papers from the corner of his desk. "I need these all back by next Thursday, and your first test will be on Tuesday. It's on the Agricultural Revolution. Your seat is in the back row, between Melanie and John."
The bell had already rung, so pretty much every seat was filled. There was only the one empty seat in the back row, which was then filled by me.
I noticed Spencer was in the class too, thank goodness. But he sat a couple of seats over from where I was. He was talking to the boy sitting on my right, John I assume, so I turned to to the girl on my left. She was shorter, probably around 5' 1", and had blonde hair.
"Hey, are you Melanie?"
"Yeah, but everybody calls me Mel. Why are you asking?"
"I'm Jessica, but everybody calls me Jessie." I said, imitating her. "I'm new." I explained.
She nodded. "Ah. Well, I can't relate to that. I've lived in this shitty town my whole life. But I doubt I'll ever leave it, even after I graduate."
"Now that is something I can relate to."

Lunch
I spotted Spencer and Orange sitting at a table with a couple of other people and dragged Mel and Sam behind me. Darrell and Brock had both texted me during second block that they had a different lunch than me.
"Hey, Spence!" I plop down in the seat next to him. "This is Sam and Mel." I gestured for them both to sit down, but I could tell they were hesitant. "Guys, these are my brothers, Orange and Spencer." Do they know the other kids at the table? It is a small town. "Who are your friends?" I looked at Spencer expectantly.
"Oh! Guys, this is our sister, Jessie. Jess, this is John, Kelly, and her brother, Zeke." I waved to them all with a smile.
John and Kelly looked to be about the same age as me. John had dirty blonde curls and bright blue eyes. Your stereotypical beauty... besides his adolescent zit-covered face. Kelly on the other hand had flawless tanned skin and gorgeous dark brown wavy hair. She looked like she lived on the beach, I wouldn't be surprised if she did.
Zeke looked nothing like Kelly. His chestnut brown hair was straight as a pin. His skin was pale and he looked like he hadn't eaten in days. He was so skinny, yet somehow muscular at the same time.
As if reading my mind, Zeke spoke up. "We're step-siblings." Everything was quiet for a moment or two until Zeke spoke again. "So, what grades are y'all in." He didn't have a southern accent, but he definitely had some sort of accent. I just couldn't figure out where he was from.
"We're all freshmen." I spoke for Mel and Sam, seeing as they were most likely never going to say anything.
"So are we." Kelly gestured to John with a smile.
"You?" I nodded my head towards Zeke.
"Junior." I just nodded a second time.
Again, some more awkward silence. But this one was because all of our mouths were full of food.
"Hey, aren't you on the girls tennis team?" John stopped eating his food to ask.
Well, that's not something I expected to be recognized for. "Yeah."
"My girlfriend is on the team. I watched the tryouts and thought you looked familiar."
"Oh, okay. Are you coming to the match on Tuesday?" I knew I wouldn't be playing, since I wasn't even at the last one. At least this way I'd have someone to hangout with there.
"Eh, I don't know. I have soccer practice. If it's not over by the time practice ends I will."
The bell rang, signaling we had to get to 3rd block.
I reluctantly dragged my body to the science lab and continued with my day.
