❝ you tell me, curtis. ❞
I WAS AT the Curtis's house by myself. Well, technically by myself. Ponyboy was out on his date with Tessa. It angered me to even think about. Sodapop, Steve, and Darry are working. Two-bit's probably out messing around with girls, so is Dally.
Johnny is here with me, but he asleep on the couch. His face looks so calm, like there's nothing bothering him. It's the calmest moment that anyone would every see him in, again.
I decided to go clean up the house a bit, so I got up and did the laundry. Making sure I did everything right, I then walked into the kitchen.
'I should make some chocolate cake, since we're out.' Gathering all the ingredients, I began to put things inside a bowl and mixing them. Then, combining the dry and wet ingredients. Finally, I put it in the oven.
Sighing loudly, I attempted to wipe the flour off my head that I accidentally went all over me. Suddenly, I heard the door open and violently slam shut. Poking my head out the door, my face turned back in disappointment.
"Hey, Ellie. What are you doin'?" Ponyboy calls ohh, walking towards the kitchen. I quickly put away all the ingredients, so that I could go back to Ponyboy's room.
"I was making some more chocolate cake, since we're out. I'll be in your room." I emphasized on the 'your', hoping Tessa heard. Fortunately, she did, because she grumbled at me.
As I walked off, I heard Tessa ask where the bathroom was. I saw Ponyboy come into his room for a bit too, probably to change or something.
"How was your date." I flopped on the bed, staring at the ceiling.
"It was okay, her personality seems a bit better. Maybe I was just judging from the outside, or she just is rude because she's not very friendly, unintentionally of course. She was carrying a mini backpack with her, don't know why."
"Mhm, now go back to the living room before she sees you with me." I grumbled, putting the sheets over my head. I tried sleeping, but it didn't work, I just wasn't tired enough.
"Oh my god!" I heard a voice about twenty minutes later. Debating on whether to go out or not, I lifted the sheets from my head. All of a sudden, I didn't need to go out there, because they came to me.
"What the hell Eleanor?" Ponyboy stormed in. He called me by my full name, and looked extremely angry. My head spun in confusion.
"What? I didn't do anything, why are you so mad?" I asked, standing up.
"Oh, so you're gonna act like you didn't decide to punch Tessa? She even has some blood on her lip. Eleanor, I know you don't like her but you didn't have to make things physical." He screamed. That's where I lost it.
"You know goddamn well that I would never do that. You really believe her more than me?" I argued back, walking out to the living room to see Tessa.
"Her face says otherwise!" He angrily responded. I quickly laced up my shoes, looking down because I felt hot tears forming in my eyes.
"You know what Ponyboy, you can believe whatever the hell you want. If you want to admit the truth, then I'll be somewhere other than here." I say, opening the door.
"How am I supposed to know if you're telling the truth?" He questioned. I shook my head.
"You tell me, Curtis." And with that, I ran out the door. I ran to the one other place I could think of that I could go, that wasn't too far. The lot.
I threw myself on the couch-like seat, and tears streamed down my face. Did he really think I hit her? I was in his room the whole time. Yes it had been 20 minutes, but then again I would never do something like that. I heard footsteps running, hoping it was Ponyboy realizing what actually happened.
"Ellie-bear." It was Johnny, was he here to lecture me?
"Look Johnny, if you're gonna lecture me then, sorry but I don't want to hear it." I said, covering my face and the fact that I was crying.
"No... I was gonna say that I believe you. I would believe you more than any other day. Plus, I saw in her backpack in the bathroom, she had fake blood and a makeup palette." Johnny reassured, sitting down next to me.
"Why doesn't he believe me? I thought we were best friends. He really thinks I would do something like that? I know that I don't like her, but I wouldn't physically harm her-"
"Sh, Ellie-bear, I know. He just needs to be in the right state of mind." Johnny cooed. I sniffled quietly, leaning against Johnny.
"Thanks Johnnycakes." I whispered. I could tell he nodded, silently responding.
"Dallas is coming soon, since I know you probably don't want to go back there tonight, maybe we can both go to Buck's place." Johnny said, a few minutes later. I nodded, and closed my eyes. I fell asleep, tear stains on my cheek.
——
I stirred awake, hearing the faint chatter of Dallas and Johnny. I was in somebody's arms, I'm guessing it's Dallas.
"So, why is this doll coming over, again?" He asked, his voice thick with an accent. I pretended to stay asleep.
"Long story short, Ponyboy thinks she hit Tessa, when I know she didn't. Ponyboy's mad at her now."
"That little shit, he needs to wise up, man." Dallas cursed. Those were exactly my thoughts, too.
"Hey, doll we're here." Dallas tapped me on the back. I acted like I just woke up.
"We're where?" I said, my voice quiet.
"Buck's place. Now be careful when goin' in, its late and there's a lot of creeps." Dallas warned me. All I did was nod.
We walked in, and I could already see many drunk men, eyeing for women. I squished closer to Dallas and Johnny, just in case. Fortunately, when someone started to tug on my arm, Dallas tugged back at my other arm, then pushed me to the other side. Eventually, we made it upstairs.
"You can sleep on the bed." Dallas said, throwing off his t-shirt.
"You sure?" I ask, my voice almost like a whisper.
"Yeah, just go doll, you need it anyways." He said, walking out to another room to get pillows and another blanket for him and Johnny. He then tossed me a t-shirt of his, since I was wearing a pair of jeans and a short sleeve shirt. I went to another room to change, then sat on the bed. I stared at the wall, blankly.
"You okay?" Dallas asked, confused after about five minutes of me just staring at the wall.
