Johnnys P.O.V
Tay Shoved Ponyboy and me out of the church, and we landed hard on the grass before I heard crashing and screaming, I looked up and saw the roof of the church caving in. I looked beside me to see Dally clubbing ponyboy hard on the back, he passed out hitting the ground and passing out then and there, I looked around. Taylor didn't get out I jumped up with the intentions of going in there, I could let her die in there, but Dally stopped me.
"No," I said, struggling "No, she's gonna die" I tried to push him off me, but it was Dally, and he was a lot stronger than me.
"She's already dead kid" he yelled at me pulling me away from the church "She can't survive that," he said, and I went into a coughing fit my body finally catching up to the fact that I was swallowing smoke. I heard sirens in the distance and sat down the grass out of exhaustion.
Tays P.O.V
I pulled my shirt over my nose and mouth to stop me from dying of smoke inhalation, but it didn't do anything, I could barely hear anything just the roaring fire a few scattered screams and yelling. I just sat there my eyes watering and burning from the ash. I heard some more people yelling then sirens...Sirens and more yelling. I sat there for maybe 10 minutes before the smoke subsided, I slowly dropped my shirt, listening for the people talking
"Is everybody okay?" I heard a guy say; I figured he could be a fireman or the 60s equivalent of a paramedic was.
"No, there was a girl, named Taylor, who was in there when the roof fell," Johnny said there was a sense of urgency in his voice "Is it possible that she would survive it?" he asked, Why would he care?
"Hm," the man said "There was a girl in there start digging" he yelled, avoiding Johnny's question. I then heard the movement of timber. I placed both my hands on the trapdoor and tried to open it, but it was no use with the millions of tons of wood that had fallen. I sighed and resumed my sitting position. It felt like I was never going to get out there, I heard shifting from above me. I stood up and tried to shove the hatch open, still no use.
"Hey" I heard a guy say, "I think someones under here" I heard a shuffling and in a few minutes I was looking at the wrinkled face of a fireman "Shes here" he called and then helped me up. "You okay kid?"
"Yeah, Yeah I'm fine" my voice was scratchy and horse. Then some 'paramedics' came up to me and ordered me around next thing I knew I was riding in an ambulance back to Tulsa "I'm pretty sure I'm good" I said to the person checking every minor burn and scratch on my body. she put ointment and other shit on it
"you know that boy was really worried about you, got real upset when he found you where dead," she said dabbing ointment on the cut on my stomach, I looked up her.
"Wh-Which boy?" I asked "what did he look like?" the lady laughed
"Skinny, Dark skin, dark hair.." she went on, but I didn't listen. Johnny why would johnny be worried I mean he doesn't trust me why, why would he be upset.
"the boys-are they okay?" I managed to say as the woman started stitching my stomach. I had almost forgotten about it; I think I just got used to the pain she chuckled
"Yeah, just a few scratches and burns, how'd you get this cut?" the woman asked, and I figured she was new at the whole being a nurse thing
"Oh, uhh fell on a piece of glass cut my stomach up," I said, and she nodded, I lurched forward as the ambulance came to a halt. The woman stood up, and I followed her to the front desk and filled out a form. I had gotten a fake ID last week so no one would ask any questions about anything.
"Okay, should be all good," she said taking the form back
"Uhh can I get the bill now, I don't have a permanent home," I thought about how to Curtis' wouldn't want me back after nearly killing Ponyboy and Johnny and starting a Soc vs Greaser war
"You can come back tomorrow, I can give it to you then sweetheart," he nurse said, and I nodded
"Thank you, mam," I said and walked out into the cold, crisp early December night air I shouldered my jacket and started making my way back to the Curtis' house so I could grab my stuff, bounce and probably figure out how to go back to 2019. I kept my head down and sat at a bus stop and lit a cigarette hoping no Soc would see me, Surprisingly I didn't see any Socs like at all I got off the bus two blocks down from the Curtis' house, I threw my cigarette on the floor making sure to put it completely out, all of the lights in the house were off. I slowly and quietly shut the door I really need a beer I thought making my way to the kitchen, opened the door of the icebox and pulled out a beer. I closed the door and turned around and say Ponyboy walking through the door, I leapt about a foot back and he looked up his jaw-dropping
"Holy shit," he said, I smiled and waved, he hugged me. I was a little taken aback but then hugged him for a few seconds before pulling away and taking a sip of beer "How did you survive that? how are you walking? how are you not in the hospital?" he whispered I chuckled
"One question at a time" I couldn't stop myself from grinning like an idiot "The hatch, I managed to get in it right before the roof completely gave way" he nodded
"Thank you for saving our lives I guess" he rubbed his neck and turned to look at a boy sleeping on the couch in the living room, Johnny. I guess I was so focused on not being seen that I didn't notice him. "You know he was really worried about you"
"I know, I heard," I said, Jesus, I sound like eleven in the season 2 finale of stranger things I thought
"I don't think he really meant what he said in the church," Ponyboy said, I shrugged he chuckled. I took another gulp of beer "So where do we go from here?" he asked I sighed taking another gulp of beer
"I guess we'll have to find out"
