Genevieve POV

I closed my eyes and waited for it. I couldn't feel the stool underneath my feet anymore.

The breeze made the cuts tingle on my feet as I felt them get lighter with each drop of blood that fell from them.

For the first time in my life, I felt free, weightless even. Katherine had completely left me now, all I could hear was the branches creaking above me and the patter of rain against the leaves.

I listened closely to the rain hoping it would relax me further till I was able to be with my mate and child.

The rain got heavier, the sound seemed to change the more I focused on it. Heavier and heavier until it almost resembled footsteps.

I felt myself drifting away.

"Mama," a voice called out from the darkness.

I was confused at the sudden sound.

I gazed into the blackness behind my eyes waiting to see the voice's source.

Gradually the blackness swirled to reveal a little girl standing in a backyard.

"Mama" the girl called again turning around, all her movements blurred together.

An older woman walked into the frame it was Paige, my mother.

"What do you want, child?" she groaned.

"Why does the sky cry?" my silver-grey eyes looked up to the sky before looking directly into mine.

"The same reason everyone cries, it dreams of a different life, different circumstances, a restart, a death..." the response trailed off as little me locked our gazes and I was pulled into my memories.

It felt like I was diving under water, but the liquid was like warm air that never actually contacted my skin. The realisation hit me... This was what everyone felt like when I forced them into their memories. The thought gave me chills.

The little me appeared in front of me and took my hand.

"Come with me, we have much to see," she gave me a toothy grin as she dragged me further into the past.

We were in the loungeroom of my childhood house, I watched my memory play out before me. Three-year-old me sat on the carpet floor watching the TV, my dad was lying on the couch watching over me. My red hair was in knots as I continued to try and brush my hair like the lady on the screen.

"Genevieve..." he chuckled as I scrunched up my face and threw the brush away in frustration.

"It's okay, here we'll do it together." He smiled at me as he picked up my discarded brush and sat on the floor behind me. "Ready?"

I nodded my head eagerly.

He began brushing my hair in small sections as to try and not pull on my hair as much.

"Look who's that on the TV?" he cheered after I yelped at the big knot he was trying to get out. "Isn't that your favourite? Why don't we sing the song with them!"

And like that we sung the rest of the way through my hair, he even pulled it into pigtails on either side of my head. I stood up jumping around excited that I looked like my favourite star from the TV. I wrapped my little arms around his neck and gave him a big kiss on the cheek.

"Thanks Daddy!" I exclaimed as I ran off to go and play with my Barbie dolls in my room.

He sat back against his hand and smiled to himself as I ran off.
