Murphy's Law: If anything can go wrong, it will.
Death ahead. But it gets fixed, don't worry.
Cub yelped as the totem he held exploded in his hand, holding his life together at the seams. He quickly grabbed another from his pocket, and kept running from the ravager. He reached the edge of the cliff, however, and found he couldn't turn back. He yelled to Tango go help, but before anything else could happen, Cub was bullrushed off the cliff.
A scream escaped him as he scrabbled, grabbing a handhold on the edge. He looked at the layer of red mist that drifted around the bottom of the Nether, obscuring what would likely be a lava ocean: certain peril, even with a totem. Still, he clutched the totem and the cliff edge tighter in their respective hands.
He shouted himself hoarse calling for help, but Tango couldn't run fast enough. Just as Tango reached the edge, Cub's shaking grip began to slip. Tango threw himself forward to catch Cub, but was too slow. And so Cub fell into the fiery depths below the Nether, his scratchy screaming echoing throughout the dimension as he fell. Tango couldn't look.
There was the sound of a totem of undying going off, and then another. And then there was silence.
The silence was broken by a roar of grief and rage, a panicked growl from a ravager, and the splash of it hitting lava. There was the sound of someone sitting down roughly on netherrack, and the faint sound of sobbing.
Cubfan135 burned to death trying to escape ravager.
Tango sighed, and looked at the message. He wiped the tears out of his eyes, and summoned up the courage to look over the edge of the cliff. It was worse than he expected. Down there, he could see Cub spread-eagled on a magma block, glassy eyes staring up into space.
Tango shifted into his more demonic form, and glided down to the outcropping. As he landed, he saw that Cub's hands were still holding two used totems of undying. He knelt down beside Cub's body, and dragged him off of the magma block.
Tears stung at the corners of Tango's eyes as he looked at Cub. And then he noticed a flicker of Vex-blue light, fading away. Tango, realising what it was, reached out for it, grabbing his own totem and shoving it into Cub's hand. He threw the blue flicker, something only he and his fellow demons could see, into Cub's chest, and waited, breath bated.
There was a moment where it seemed like Tango's last-ditch attempt to bring Cub back from the dead. Tango gasped a shaky breath, and then-
BANG
The totem of undying went off. Cub's eyes snapped open as the magic of the totem healed his wounds. Tango stood up shakily, offering Cub a hand to do the same.
They paused for a moment, and then Tango pulled Cub into a hug, in part to hide the fact that he was crying tears of relief. A couple moments later, Tango let go, and sent a message to the server.
Tangotek: It's okay! He's alive!
As the flood of relieved messages came pouring in, Tango noticed Cub looking at him oddly.
"...Yes?" Tango asked, confused.
"Uh..." Cub struggled to put his thoughts into words, which is a good sign that someone has died recently. "Excuse me for asking, but... Since when did you have... You know." He gestured vaguely and Tango's wings, claws and horns.
"Right. Yeah." Tango had entirely forgotten to disguise himself. "Uh... Don't get mad at me, but I haven't been entirely honest about things..."
Well. That's awkward. See ya next time!
