I saw her, struggling to get out of the trucks path. I rushed to get to her side. The rain hit my face, blinding me. I didn't see it happen, but I heard a ear shattering scream. The next thing I saw was the truck, driving away.

I pushed through the rain and wind and rushed to her side, holding her hand and stroking her cheek.

I called her mom, what else could I do?! It ran twice before she picked up. "Ms. Lan, Carissa was just hit by a truck." I told her quickly.

It took her a few seconds to process what I was saying. After a few seconds I heard small sobs, realizing it was me who was crying, not her mom.

"Is it still there, the truck." Her mom asked.

"No... It drove away." I responded quickly.

"I'll call an ambulance." she said, about to hang up.

"I'll-" SLAM! went the phone, her mom was mad, at me. I could tell. "Stay with her."

Blood covered her body, she had a black eye, and a bloody nose as well.

"Hang in there, we are going to get you help. I love you, your so beautiful. Just stay with me, please." I told her as her eyes slowly closed.

It felt as if my world ended. All things good in the world just, washed away with the rain. My tears, like an endless flowing river. sprinkled onto her soft cheeks.

Ms. Lan came a few moments later, pushing me back from Carissa, holding her daughter in her arms. She didn't cry, not wanting to show weakness.

Soon the ambulance arrived and put her on a large stretcher. They let Ms. Lan go on the ambulance, because she was family. I watched as the flashing red lights blurred from my vision.

I got my keys, not explaining to my mom where I was going, there was no time. I got in my car, and drove to the emergency room.

Ms. Lan was in the hallway, pacing back and forth. "Ms. Lan!" I called, jogging towards her. She shot my a furious glare. "Ms. Lan! How's Carissa?" I asked, whipping away a few of my tears.

"I don't know!" She snapped.

"Haven't the doctors..." I started.

"THEY WONT TELL ME ANYTHING! I KNEW I SHOULDN'T HAVE LET HER OUT IN A STORM LIKE THIS, BUT KNOWING HOW MUCH SHE CARES FOR YOU, I KNEW SHE WOULD HAVE FOUND A WAY OUT ANYWAYS! AND WHY DIDNT YOU EVEN TRY TO HELP HER FROM THAT TRUCK?! THAT SHOULD BE YOU IN THE EMERGENCY ROOM NOT HER!" She yelled, angry.

"I tried." I said firmly. "I couldn't make it to her fast enough. I would have pushed her out of the way without hesitation if I could have! Your right that should be me in that room, but its not, so we have to do our best to make sure shes okay!" I walked away and went to the lady at the front desk.

She had tan skin and wore blue scrubs. "Excuse me." I said quietly.

"Hello!" She said cheerfully, smiling.

"I was wondering if I could get an update on how Carissa Lan is doing?" I asked, crossing my fingers for good luck.

"Im sorry, unless your family, I cant tell you anything." she explained. The nurse began to stand up, walking away from me.

"Wait! Her mother is right here!" I exclaimed, getting Ms. Lan.

"Ms. Lan, the lady might be able to tell you something!" I told her. Tears formed in her eyes as she motion for me to sit down I sat next to her, confused.

She cleared her throat. "About 17 years ago, a young mother, only 17 herself, gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. The babies father was young as well, and couldn't support the baby or her mother, and left them.

The mother wanted to go to collage still, get a job, have a family. It was hard though, to hard for the poor mother, the babies grandmother took care of her most of the time.

One day, the mother couldn't handle being a teen mom. So, she left the baby at the door step of an orphanage.

Another lady found the baby, and adopted her. The girl grew up, never knowing she was adopted. Her adopted mother, never got birth records or certificates, so she couldn't qualify as a 'mother' legally to hospitals." She explained.

"Carissa..." I began and ms. Lan nodded.
