at one point, he'd say, "i love you,"
into the phone,
and i would smile.

now, the line is dead.
the phone doesn't ring.
now, he says nothing.
i say, "please come back," into the static.
the phone beeps, and then there is the deadly silence.
a dark reminder.
i cry.
