Chapter 11

I could almost sense something was wrong.

It took all I had not to go and find where Gabriel went.

I shifted nervously.

"Emma, they're okay!" Carl said putting his hand on my shoulder.

"Something's wrong. I know it." I muttered.

"You're not normally like this. What's wrong?" Carl asked.

"I don't know! I'm just... Worried." I shrugged.

"They're gonna be back soon. With what, I don't know, but they'll come back." Carl reassured me.

I took in a deep breath and nodded, forcing myself to calm down.

"Okay."

There was a banging on the door, snapping me awake.

I growled.

"Let me in! Please!"

Gabriel.

Dammit.

I stood up and began tugging at the board we used to barricade the door shut.

Michonne began chopping at it with a hammer and I could hear walkers outside.

She heaved the door down and Gabriel busted in, almost as soon as the walkers began getting through the little sharp logs that we used to stab any walkers that came close.

"Follow me!" Gabriel ran to his office, and hopped down where the floorboards used to be.

"What the fuck did you do?!" I growled, leaping down after him, turning into a wolf when my feet hit the ground.

We rushed under the church, and came out on the other side.

The walkers just went inside the doors, so we doubled back and took them down.

Carl and I dragged them outside.

But a fire truck smashed into the porch, blocking the door in the process.

Abraham hopped out, along with Maggie, Glenn, Rosita and... Where is Eugine?

"Eugine lied." Abraham said, as if he read my thoughts.

I tilted my head to the side, not really sure what he meant.

"He said that he knew the cure, but he didn't. He isn't even a scientist," Maggie added.

I nodded slowly, starting to understand.

"Are they not back yet?" Rosita asked.

Michonne shook her head.

Maggie turned to the others. "Maybe we should go and help them if they need it."

Everyone nodded, and the fire truck was off again.

Carl and I climbed up the space where the porch used to be, and we waited for them to return.

They came back, with the heavy scent of sadness and death on them.

Daryl hopped out, carrying a dead Beth in his arms. Maggie let out a choked sob.

Even Daryl was crying.

We buried her. I have to say, Daryl was pretty shaken up by this.

He was pissed, to say the least.

"Daryl," I said softly.

He turned around to glare at me.

I didn't flinch or look away.

Instead, I walked right up to him.

"It's gonna be okay." I hugged him.

I hugged a man almost covered in blood, who was breaking down.

Maggie and Carl watched in silence.

Daryl sniffed, but he kneeled down to hug me back.

"Thank you."

I nodded, then pulled, away.

I grimaced then.

Even though I didn't like Beth, it doesn't mean that I wanted her dead.

Maggie said a prayer, and we waited for a moment before we walked back into the church.

I curled up next to Carl, and tried to drift into sleep.

But I heard a crunch from outside.

I slipped my black hunting knife out of my boot, and crept towards the door.

Everyoen was in the main room, but the crunch came from Gabriel's office.

I snapped my head around, and walked that way.

I forced myself to calm down.

I placed my hand on the doorknob, bit my lip, and yanked open the door.

Two girls peered at me, one with glasses, and the other with a pony tail.

The girls from when I ran away.
