The group made their way through the small route 2, also known as Avance Trail, and into Santalune Forest. "Sooo. Anybody got a map?" Rex asked. "I got one," Cassandra said. "My folks never let me leave home without it." She grabbed a small device out of her purse and opened it. "We are currently in Santalune Forest, and Santalune City should be right outside the forest."

"Alright. Lets keep moving forward then," Rex said. Just then Beverly had an idea. "Hey Rex! Since we still haven't had a single battle since we got our Pokémon, do you think we could have a battle now?" she asked. "Yeah! That's a great idea. You up for it?" he asked his starter. "Froakie!" it said determined. "How about you, Chespin?" Beverly asked her's. "Chespin!" it nodded as it jumped down to the floor.

"Wait!" Cassandra interrupted, remembering something very important. "I forgot to give you guys these," she said taking out three devices, one blue, one red, and another green. "I picked these with the color of the starters. Mine is light blue in the top, and tan in the bottom." She handed the devices to the other three. "They're called pokédexes! They're basically high tech encyclopedias, and with them you can check your Pokémon's abilities, moves, and, if you can't tell, their genders. You can also access the Pokémon's information, and finds out where they are commonly found. Go ahead and check your Pokémon's moves and abilities before the battle."

"This is amazing!" Rex exclaimed. He then turned his dex on, and pointed it towards Froakie. "Froakie!" the dex started saying. "The bubble frog Pokémon. It protects its skin by covering its body in delicate bubbles. Beneath its happy-go-lucky air, it keeps a watchful eye on its surroundings. This Froakie is a male. This Froakie knows the following moves: Pound, Growl, Bubble." Rex had a look of pure amazement from the device's capabilities. "This. Is. AWESOME!"

"My turn!" Beverly said. She pointed her's towards Chespin. "Chespin. The spiny nut Pokémon. Such a thick shell of wood covers its head and back that even a direct hit from a truck wouldn't faze it. This Chespin is a male. This Chespin knows the following moves: Tackle, Growl, Vine Whip." After the pokédex finished its speech, Beverly also had a look of pure awe.

"Well then, now that that's out of the way, shall we begin our battle, my lady?" Rex asked in a very gentlemanly manner which made Beverly giggle. "When did you become such a gentleman?" she asked.

"At gentleman camp," he replied jokingly, making her giggle yet again.

"Will you two stop blabbering and get to the part with the fighting on it already?!" James exclaimed, clearly annoyed, making Cassandra giggle this time. James smiled proudly at himself for making her laugh.

"Relax, Jimmy. It's about to get good. Let's rock and roll, Froakie!" Froakie turned around to face Beverly, with a fierce expression.

"Alright! Time to smash, Chespin!" Chespin also turned to look at Froakie, also looking ready for a battle. "Ladies first," Rex said with a nod of his head.

"Well thank you. Chespin use Vine Whip!" Chespin obeyed and produced two vines from its back and swung at Froakie.

"Dodge it, Froakie, then use Pound!" Froakie was a very fast Pokémon, and jumped to the side. The vines hit the ground, bringing up dirt, then Froakie jumped towards Chespin and hit him on the head, making Chespin fall on its behind. He started to rub his head, then quickly stood up and growled at Froakie. Froakie got a little scared, but still stood his ground.

"Great job, Chespin!," Beverly exclaimed. "Now his attacks won't be as strong. Now quickly, use tackle!"

Chespin ran forward and and tackled Froakie to the ground.

"Oh no! Quick, Froakie use Bubble while he's close!" Rex quickly commanded. Froakie shot some bubbles from its mouth, and even though they weren't very effective, plus the fact that its attacks were now weaker, Chespin fell to the ground groaning in pain. "Chespin! Use Vine Whip!" This time, the super effective attack hit the defenseless Pokémon. But that wasn't the end of Froakie.

"Como on, buddy, get up!" exclaimed a worried Rex. "I know you can do it!" Froakie got up with a lot of effort, groaning and with a look of pain, but got up nonetheless. Chespin was looking pretty banged up himself, but not quite as much as Froakie, but Froakie was much more determined than Chespin, to win and not let his trainer down. Just then, Froakie started glowing light blue. "Whoa. What's happening?" Rex wondered. He got his pokédex out and opened it up. "Torrent," it began to say. "A Pokémon's ability to Strengthen Water type moves to inflict greater damage when low on health."

"Well, that's handy," Rex said as the pokédex finished. "Now let's finish this! Go, Froakie, use Bubble!" Froakie fired, and this time it hurt Chespin way more than previously. "Now quickly, use Pound before it recovers!" Froakie in a flash of speed was beside Chespin as it tried to get up, and pounded him. Chespin dropped, and it didn't look like he was getting up anytime soon.

"Oh no! Chespin!" Beverly instantly rushed over to Chespin and picked him up. Cassandra dug for something in her purse then pushed Rex and James away to examine Chespin's wounds. "Nothing bad, just a couple bruises. Nothing a potion can't make better!" She exclaimed as she began to spray the potion on Chespin. He started to look much better. "I'm glad you're okay, Chespin. Get some rest until we can get you to a Pokémon Center. "Chespin!" he said proud of himself, then nuzzled Beverly's face, making her giggle. She then proceeded to return Chespin to his pokéball.

"Sorry about Chespin, Bev," Rex said worriedly. "I hope he feels better." Beverly smiled at him. "Don't worry about it. It was a battle after all," she said. "Thanks for that. It was fun battling you." Rex smiled, and they shook hands. Then Rex bent over to look at Froakie, then rubbed his head, making him smile. "Thanks for being a great battle partner, buddy," Rex thanked him. "You should probably get some rest as well."

"Wait!" Cassandra exclaimed. "I should probably spray the rest of the potion on Froakie as well, to help him heal." After she took care of Froakie, Rex returned him to his pokéball. "Well, shall we continue?" Cassandra asked.

They all continued through the forest, continuing their journey in the marvelous world of Pokémon!
