Pete POV

I was furious. I imagined all the disgusting things I would do to Kao after all this mess. One way or another, he needed to pay his sins.

I can no longer see the shape of the houses through the trees."'Go search the woods' he says, where are we gonna supposed to look?" I frown in annoyance.

"Pete, there is this past time called 'thinking', you really should try it." Kao replied, he was armed with that bizarre sword made by his poison magic. It rested on his left shoulder.

"What a pussy." I scoffed.

Kao ignored what I said. "Father has this routine where I was left in the Demonoid Tower in my guard. That means he is tearing through a hole from a hell dimension."

"And why are you sharing this with me?" I asked, my voice was more in shock than in distrustful.

"Because being his Champion sickens me," Kao looked pained. "I'm doing this for a chance of freedom."

"Well, your father sickens me too," I said, my foot snapping a twig underneath me as we strolled down the slope.

"I have known that he will make everyone kneel before the dark lord, I don't know who he means. Never seen him talk to him. I wanted to spy but the demons might notice." Kao said. "He should give up this mad dreams or he'll suffer the punishment."

Kao stopped at the lip of the hill, stunned. I was busy killing him with my stare. But there was something on his look that made me stop on my feet as well.

"What the fuck?" was all I can manage to say.

The land that stretched out had black rotting trees. The sky here was very different. The clouds were like raining ash, crows were hovering.

"That's up to you." said Kao. He waited for my answer.

Shaking my head in exhaustion that I was paired with Ghost, I say. "Fine. Fine."

For the first time, Kao smiled and it annoyed me because he looks handsome despite having that long scar on his face. "Cool."

Bright POV

I made my way to the crowd at the Scarlet Blade tent, and I found Third standing at the rails. I sucked a hard breath upon seeing P'Aun next to him. They seemed very close to each other.

A pang of mad pain strike my heart.

A knotted had form in the back of my throat. I walked a few steps, reaching beside Third. P'Aun first noticed me. "Hey, man."

"Sup." My coolness was wavering off. God, I hate this perfect Aun. So handsome and yet so...just abs. Yuck. I diverted my attention to Third. "Here." I handed him over a bottle of water.

Third smiled at me. "Thank you, Bright." Then he noticed my expression. "What's the prob?"

I glared at P'Aun in a way I know Third couldn't understand. Then someone grabbed my arm. When I turn, I met Bone's annoying smile. "Yiiiee, you're here to give our little princess some water." he teased.

"Shut the hell up, Bone."

"You two are way too showy, Namtan and Jay even notice it." Bone laughed, jerking his head at the bench. They both waved their hands and they continued flirting.

"If we're gonna keep the couple stare at me, could someone please put me in the arena, let Kong's fire magic strip my clothes, so everyone would stare at my glorious body."

"Ew, nobody wants to see you naked." said Bone.

The hollow of Third's cheek flushed, but the blush is slow to fade.

The moment was ruined by P'Aun, he put his arm over Third's shoulder.  "Where are we going to eat lunch?" He asked Third.

"He's going to have lunch with me!"

"no, he's going with me."

I squared my shoulder. Third jumped between me and P'Aun. "No, with me!"

 Bone nervously glanced at us.

"I'm going with Bright." He tried to smile.

"It's settled then." P'Aun nodded.

"Whatever you say." I reply, then I turn my gaze to Third. "If this is how you're going to punish me...then I'll accept it. I don't care what you want as long as we're still friends. He stays with you."

A mix of confusion and worry swept across Third's face, he opened his mouth and clamps it shut.

It was my fault that I fooled around. He had every right to break my heart. That long-lasting effect of Faerie Blood gave me dreams of touching Third, only to wake up and I was hugging and kissing my pillow.

Classic Bright. Once I went out of the tent, I have a feeling he is staring at my back.

Pete POV

Kao's sword vanished once we step into the rotten part of the forest.  "Hope that it just cancels our magic." He said while he bent on one knee, examining the black flowers that were once blooming colors.

I was twisting my hand and my skin didn't turn metal. "Do you know what kind of magic your father is using?"

Kao rose to his feet. "His main magic is ink, while he practiced demon magic that he found in the restricted area of the library in the magic council when he was a teenager. Opening portals—that I don't know about."

We dive deeper into the rotten forest and there, at the heart. Strange symbols written on the dead grass. "Runes"

"Demonic runes." Kao answered.

"What does it mean?" I circled around, and there were knives scattering. It was a wicked weapon with curving blades, meant to jab someone.

"Sacrifice and summoning symbols." Kao whispered. "Maybe he had been sacrificing some people."

"There are no missing reports in the police station." I knitted my eyebrows.

Kao gave me a blank look. "Father had been kidnapping people in the past, a sacrifice to ancient demons to get what he wants. He abducts them on the other side of town. If he is doing it in here, everyone will be suspicious."

"That's very clever." I pinchef my nose.

"Indeed." Kao lifted the knife close to his face. He crouched down and drew the summoning symbol.  "I've seen this before. They're Arkana. A steel forged by Krevar energy. Deadly for wizards."

"But you're holding it—"

"If you get stab, you idiot. Your wounds will burn like hell, and it will eat away your skin until you become human ash." Kao said.

"Don't be ridiculous" I chuckled.

"Are you always this dumb?" Kao narrowed his gaze. "Or—"

"You should choose your words more carefully, Ghost." I lifted one finger at him. "I can—"

"You can kill me?" He supported sarcastically.

"Don't interrupt me!" I shouted.

Kao sucked the air, his patience was shaking. "Whatever."

"I hate you. You're such a pussy." I said.

An unearthly howl swung our heads in where we enter. I stared in horror as the grass was leaking in black liquid.

Kao and I whirled. I thought it was a demon, and we can't use our powers at this state.

I can see that it wasn't just a demon at all, it was a door to the other dimension.  We have only no time to scream before we were hauled through the doorway and the portal closed over our head.
