District 2

I was shaking after I was taken off of the stage. My fellow tribute had volunteered for someone else. I didn’t know how she could; I would never have chosen this path. Of course, people rarely got a choice with these Games. The Hunger Games was all about control being taken away from us. That’s my theory as to why people are so ready to kill each other, because they feel that the only way that they can regain the control that the Capitol has taken from them is to take away the control of a fellow tribute, by ending their life.

My parents were the first people to visit me. My mum ran straight over to me and hugged me while my father stood further towards the door. “Come in dad” I said to him. He shook his head. “Why not?” I asked. “I know you can win. Having a long, emotional conversation will cause you to seem weak, especially if you’re crying” he said. “You really think I can win?” I questioned him. He nodded. “You’re a Career tribute” he said. I instantly shook my head, not wanting to be associated with the people who entered these games to kill everyone, the people who had been preparing their whole lives for these Games. “You’re strong; you can make them think that you’re a career tribute” he said. I shook my head again. “You have to” he said, his eyes boring into me, red, as if he were about to cry. That look would haunt me for the rest of my life.

Rob was the last person to visit me. “I'm so jealous” he said as he walked in, a smile on his face. I tried my best to mirror his smile. Many of the boys from our district claimed to want to compete in the Games; however, as I had noticed today, not one of them was willing to volunteer. “It will be so easy for you to win!” he said excitedly. “Why?” I asked him. He looked at me as if I was crazy. “You’re strong, you can beat up anyone from our district, let alone the skinny weak ones from districts 8-12” he said, as if strength was all you needed to have to win the Games. If this was the case, he was right; I would have a good chance. But he wasn’t right. The Hunger Games wasn’t a wrestling match or a fight to the death, it was about survival.

I tried not to remember the Games, or what I had just done. I knew that I had done the right thing. Tina wouldn’t have been able to compete in the Games. She had no sense of survival and she hated doing anything adventurous. This was why it was so good that we lived in district 2, she has everything she needs to survive. A part of me didn’t want her to come and visit me, I didn’t know if I could hold my tears in if she came to say goodbye.

But she did come. She ran in ahead of my parents, heading straight into my arms. “Mum, dad, can I have a minute alone with Tina?” I asked them. Then nodded and quietly left the room. “I’m sorry you’re here” she said sincerely. “It’s not your fault” I said, stroking her hair exactly as I did when she was younger and scared. “If I hadn’t been picked, you wouldn’t have volunteered for me” she said. I smiled, resisting the urge to cry. “You didn’t choose to get picked T” I said to her. I hated that fact that she was blaming herself for this. “You can win Mitchie, I know you can” she said. I nodded, not wanting to tell her that I knew that I had no hope. “You’ll try, won’t you?” she asked me. I nodded instantly, knowing that there was no way that I couldn’t. “I love you T” I said, pulling her into a hug. She slapped me softly. “Don’t be soppy, the cameras will see you and the other tributes will think that you’re weak” she said. I chuckled at her. “There are no cameras in here” I told her, not letting go of her. “I love you too Mitchie” she whispered into my shoulder. And I could tell from those five words, that she was as scared as I felt.

When we finished saying our goodbyes I met up with my fellow tribute Taylor Lautner. “Why did you volunteer?” he asked me. I decided to answer him honestly, not playing games or setting myself up as a Career tribute. “My sister got picked. I couldn’t let her go up” I said. He nodded. “You’re a good sister” he said. My lips fluttered upwards in what I hoped was a smile, although I couldn’t be sure. “Thanks” I said, my voice barely a whisper as I made my way towards the train. Away from my district.
