District 4
District 4’s industry was fishing. Conor Maynard looked at his outfit, failing to see what the stylist, Heather Morris, could see. He was dressed in normal clothes, but it looked like he was wrapped in mesh, as if he was caught in a fishing net. Conor rolled his eyes. Rather than it making him look like a threat, it made it look like he would be easily caught. The mesh restricted his movement and he hated the way it felt. It was bad enough that he would have to compete in the Games, but now he would be a laughing-stock to all of the other tributes, making him the easiest target. And there was nothing that he could do about it.
Selena Gomez scoffed when Heather gave her the outfit, and after trying it on, she saw that her scoff was justified. She was wearing a dress from home with ballet pumps, but her dress could not be seen because she was covered from head to toe in silver mesh. She thought that she looked stupid. Heather wanted her to look strong and brave, but the outfit completely contradicted that. When she prepared herself to get into the chariot, she was pleased to see that Conor looked just as stupid, if not more stupid, then she did. She smiled at him reassuringly, and he rolled his eyes at her, gesturing to their outfits. They didn’t say anything because they didn’t want to hurt Heather’s feelings.
The chariot began to move. He started to play around with the mesh on his chest, trying to make it look a bit less ‘I got caught in a net’. She watched him and copied, fiddling with hers. As the crowd began to spot them and cheer, they were both still fiddling. Suddenly, Conor ripped his off and the audience cheered louder. Selena saw what they saw. He broke away from the mesh, it made him look brave. She pulled hers off too, trying to look strong as she did it. They smiled at each other. To everyone around them, they were brave.
District 5
Ed Sheeran admired his outfit. District 5’s industry was power, and the stylist, Chord Overstreet, wanted them to look powerful. His idea was to dress them as superheroes. Ed thought that this idea wasn’t the best, it made it look like they thought that they Games were a joke, but he couldn’t help but admire the way he looked. He assumed that he’d look a bit like a Halloween character, but in fact, he looked powerful, strong, which is the way that Chord wanted him to look. He had the number 5 on his chest to represent his district, with his name on his back, so that the spectators could remember him and maybe turn into sponsors.
Carly Rae Jepsen smiled to herself. She thought that the industry of power was the best thing that she could ever have gotten. She received a 6 from the Gamesmakers, which could make her be seen a weak. Her outfit made her look like a superhero, made her look strong, as if she shouldn’t be messed with. This pleased her. She knew that winning the Games didn’t matter as much to her as it did to other tributes, if she died, she would see her mum. It was a comfort that a lot of the other tributes didn’t have. They had more reason to fight than she did, more of a reason to win. She couldn’t let them see that. They had to believe that she could win, otherwise she would have no chance.
They looked completely different from one another. Ed was dressed in blue, Carly in red. The only thing that joined them was the big 5 on their chests and their names at the back. They barely acknowledged each other as they sat in the chariot, him focusing on his old life, her focusing on her mother. The crowd didn’t look or sound impressed with them, which is what Ed was initially afraid of. They didn’t look powerful to the people around them, instead they looked like they were making a mockery out of the Games, which was the last thing that they were trying to do. Carly shook her head. This was the worst possible start to the Games.
District 6
Their main export was transportation. Jay McGuiness failed to see how his stylist, Becca Tobin, could dress him. He was wearing blue overalls and she had done his make-up so it looked as if he had dirt and grease on his face. He knew she had a plan, but he hadn’t figured it out yet. He thought about Max, his former best friend. He wondered what Max had to wear when he was here this time last year. Jay didn’t remember last year’s opening ceremony, and that scared him. Would he one day forget Max? Max was dead because of him, he didn’t deserve to be forgotten by the people that should remember him.
Taylor Swift was in two minds about her outfit. She looked like a boy, dressed in overalls. This made her look odd, but it also made it look stronger. Generalisations would suggest that men were stronger than women, so looking like a guy should be an advantage to her. When she looked at the chariot, she could see why Becca had dressed them like this. The chariot had been painted to look exactly like a car. Taylor had never actually seen a car in the flesh before, but from watching TV adverts, she could see that the chariot looked pretty close! Her and Jay were dressed as mechanics, they looked like they were working on the car, giving the appearance that they were strong enough to work on a car, and strong enough to compete in the Games. It didn’t really make sense to Taylor, but if it made sense to Becca, she’s go with it.
Jay was pleased to see that he and Taylor were identical. They resembled a team, which he liked. Max had no one to help him in the Games, at least in Taylor, Jay had someone to confide in, someone to fight with. As the chariot moved towards the crowd, the people started to cheer. From what Jay could tell, the crowd actually thought that they were in a car, thanks to Becca’s creativity. He looked over at Taylor and smiled. She smiled back at him. She was pleased that he was there with her. Whatever his reasons for volunteering in the Games, she was glad he was here.
