Taylor Lautner’s p.o.v

“Do you think you’ll get picked?” my friend Rob asked me. I shrugged my shoulders. “You’re not nervous are you?” he asked me. I laughed at him. “No way, I’m excited” I said, hiding my nerves well. “And if you get picked?” Rob asked me, looking concerned. “If I get picked, look after my mum for me?” I asked him seriously. “Of course” he said. I smiled at him. Being picked for the Hunger Games didn’t scare me as much as leaving my family scared me.

I sat with my dad in our garden, an hour before the reapings.  “Son...” my dad started, then he thought about what he was going to say and stopped. “Yeah dad?” I asked him. He put a hand on my shoulder. “You’re going to get picked” he said. I looked at him, shocked. “What do you mean?” I asked him. “Taylor, it’s our time” he said simply. We sat together in silence. “Dad, I can’t do this” I said shaking. “Yes you can” he said pulling me into a hug. “I love you” I said to him, knowing that if he was correct, this would be the last time that I would say it. “I’ll miss you” he said.

Our host was a red-headed woman with dark eyes. From what I’d seen of her throughout the years, she didn’t age. “It’s been said that District 2 is second best, always trailing behind District 1. Well I’m here to tell you, this is going to change. The winner of the next Hunger Games is going to be from District 2!” The crowd cheered. We were one of the more competitive districts, we always wanted to win. The trouble was, we never usually did. We all waited with baited breath while our host drew the first name. “...Taylor Lautner” she cried. I could hear many sighs of relief that other boys weren’t chosen. I found my father’s eyes within the crowd. He mouthed to me ‘I love you too’

Michelle Keegan’s p.o.v

“I don’t want to get picked Mitchie” my younger sister Tina said, stroking my hair. “I don’t want you to get picked either T” I said, refusing to look at her for fear of crying. “What happens if I do?” she asked me. “You won’t” I said, refusing to acknowledge the fact that one of our names could possibly be picked later on today at the reapings. “Can I get something to eat?” she asked me. “Sure” I said, laughing to myself. I love her but she had the attention span of a gnat!

“Girls, it’s time” Our mother said later that day. “C’mon T, let’s go” I said, grabbing her hand and meeting our parents at the front of the house. My dad put an arm around my shoulders and my mum put an arm around my sister. I squeezed Tina’s hand tightly, trying to reassure her as we made our way to the middle of our district, where the reapings would be held. The usual protocol was to stand according to your ages, but I kept Tina right by my side, afraid to let her go. She only had her name entered once but you couldn’t be too careful.

“The winner of the next Hunger Games is going to be from District 2!” Our host said. The crowd cheered. I found it barbaric that they were cheering for one of us to kill 23 strangers. I hated the whole idea of the Hunger Games, it made me sick. “...Taylor Lautner” she said. I recognised the name; all of the people that could compete in the Hunger Games in this district went to the same school so I was fairly sure that I would have heard of whoever got picked. He was big built, I was sure he’d be alright in the games, even if he didn’t win. “...Tina Keegan” she said. I felt Tina give a shudder beside me. She tried to go up on the stage but I wouldn’t let her. “I volunteer!” I shouted above the murmuring. I ran onto the stage quickly, before they could pinpoint Tina and make her go up. “And you are?” the host said. “Michelle Keegan” I said. She looked me up and down, making me feel uncomfortable. “Right, well we have our two tributes: Taylor Lautner and Michelle Keegan” I looked to my left and saw Taylor shiver slightly when his name was called. He looked at me. “Good luck” I mouthed to him. He gave me the ghost of a smile back.
