District 1

Nathan Sykes’ p.o.v

Once we had gone through the crowd, we got off the chariot and had to wait for the other tributes to finish. Then we could go on and have our interviews, one at a time, district by district, boys before girls. The interviews were taking place the day before the Games began, to get us ready for them. The interviewers were the main hosts of the Games, Danny O’donoghue and Jessie J, and I was really looking forward to meeting them. To appearing strong in front of them. Ariana next to me kept trying to catch my eye, but I couldn’t look at her, just in case she started speaking to me and I lost my train of thought. “You’re a career tribute right?” someone said to me. I looked up to see a big guy looking down at me. “Yeah. Nathan Sykes, District 1” I said. “Taylor Lautner, District 2” he said, shaking my hand. If I had to have an allie, it may as well he him. “Nathan Sykes, they’re ready for you”

Jessie J: From District 1, Nathan Sykes everybody!

Danny O: So Nathan, you got a 9 at the training centre. How did you feel about that?

Nathan: It felt great. I’ve been working towards the Games for a really long time. So getting a 9 really makes me feel that all the hard work was worth it.

Jessie J: You mentioned working towards the Games. You volunteered for the Games, why was that?

Nathan: I wanted to be victorious. When you win, you receive income from the Capitol and are given a special status. I want that, I need that.

Danny O: Are you planning to set yourself up as a career tribute?

Nathan: I’m in District 1, I can fight, and I’m great with weapons. I don’t think that I couldn’t set myself up as a career tribute. I have ‘career’ written all over me.

Jessie J: So, your outfit is amazing, it really shows us what your District is about. How would you describe all the gold?

Nathan: Our stylist thought that, because we are the wealthiest district, we should portray that in what we wear. The gold shows our wealth, and the fact that we’re really privileged back home. District 1 tributes have a really good chance in the Games, and our clothes portray that.

Danny O: And how is your home life?

Nathan: I don’t want to bring my family into this. My desire to volunteer was for them, but it was also for me. I’m here because of my own choices, they shouldn’t be brought into that.

Jessie J: What is your strategy for the Games? Are you planning to form any allies?

Nathan: Well, because I’m a career tribute, I will aim to form allies with other career tributes. But at the end of the day, it’s every man for himself. Harry Styles isn’t going to be the only District 1 winner.

Ariana Grande’s p.o.v

Watching Nathan’s interview made me feel sick. He sounded so pretentious and annoying, and I didn’t know how I could have smiled at him when we were in the chariot. I really hoped no one would mistake us for friends, or even worse, lovers! I am not a career tribute, and I knew that I needed that to come across in my interview. As Nathan was told to leave the stage, a Peacekeeper came to escort me into his place. I didn’t know where we would go after our interview, but with the Games starting tomorrow, I didn’t want to ask.

Jessie J: The other District 1 tribute, Ariana Grande!

Danny O: Ariana, you look amazing. Do you like your outfit?

Ariana: I like the way it looks, but not what it represents.

Jessie J: What do you mean by that?

Ariana: The gold represents the wealth of my District. But although our District may have a lot more money than some of the other Districts, but I’m not as privileged as Nathan suggested.

Danny O: So you had a hard life back home?

Ariana: No, don’t think that I’m saying my life was hard. So many people have lives that are so much harder than mine was and I had a good life. It’s just, Nathan made it seem like we can win the Games because we come from District 1, but that’s not necessarily true.

Jessie J: So you don’t think you can win?

Ariana: I think that, if I want to win, I’ll have to work really hard. And I’m willing to do that.

Danny O: That’s great. You got the training score of a 7. How will that impact your strategy for winning the Games?

Ariana: I can’t reveal too much, but let’s just say, my score of 7 means nothing. Don’t underestimate me.

Jessie J: We certainly won’t! So how’s your life at home? Are you close to your family?

Ariana: (Pause) it’s only me and my mum at home, and we’re really close. She’s my entire world and…

Danny O: We can see that this is upsetting for you. How do you think your mum feels?

Ariana: She wants me to do well. She doesn’t care about winning, she just wants me to be alive. And I’m going to make sure that I am.
