Chapter 9- Mundanes, Shadowhunters and Jace.

Clary POV

"So you're a shadowhunter and shadowhunters protect us... mundanes," I say hesitantly, making sure I got all of the facts right. "You protect us from demons and you're half angel?" I ask, double-checking that my facts were correct.

"Yes," Jace says, popping a crispy chip into his mouth. "Any other questions?" He sighs impatiently, wanting to ask questions of his own.                                                                                                                                                                "Just one last one," I promise. "How-" I begin, before Alec bursts into the restaurant shouting for Jace.

"Jace, high demon activity in Pandemonium," he says between deep breaths. "Izzy went alone and told us to meet her there."

He says, bending over with his hands on his knees trying to take in as much air as possible.

I look at Alec with confusion. "Who's Iz-"

"You idiot!" Jace shouts, jumping to his feet.

"Geez! Can't a girl say anything around here?" I mutter quietly to myself.

"No," Jace says to me quickly, only half-joking. "Why did you let her go alone? She could get killed!" Jace screeched, grabbing his leather jacket and slipping it over his black t-shirt that clung to him tightly showing his defined abs, standing out against his olive skin...

"I didn't let her!" Alec shouted back defensively. "She left a note saying to meet her there; I came as soon as I saw it." Jace slid a couple more knifes into his belt as Alec handed them to him.

"Okay, let's go," Jace muttered, leaving me at the table, left to pay the bill, not looking back once.

"What a gentleman," I sigh under my breath, before someone slides into the booth next to me.

"That's Jace Lightwood for you," she laughs, picking up one of the chips and taking a huge bite out of it.

"You know Jace?" I ask. The look up at the girl and notice that she is stunningly beautiful. Her curly brown hair falls delicately around her light brown skin. Her amber eyes shine as she laughs, her eyelashes the colour of toast. I instantly feel jealous; nobody should be that pretty- not naturally anyway.

"Of course I do, everyone around here does," she states as if it was obvious. "I'm Maia, by the way."

"Clary," I say introducing myself politely.

"I feel like I recognise you," curiously she looks at my face, studying me like a textbook. "What's your surname?"

"Fray." I say, starting to feel uncomfortable because of her staring. Her eyes widen as if from recognition, but relax almost immediately.

"Are you okay?" I ask, concerned.

"I've got to go," she says jumping to her feet and running out of the restaurant.

Weird, I think to myself before slamming a few dollars on the table and walking out into the cold streets of New York.

Jace POV

I wave my hand in front of the bouncer before walking confidently in to the Pandemonium club.

Alec taps my left shoulder and whispers, "Over there."

I follow his pointing arm to where I can see Isabelle trying to lure a demon into the alleyway with her. I quickly scan the area, trying to spot any immediate dangers that we're unaware of. I see a pale faced, white haired boy, smiling at Isabelle and the demon, and that's when I see it- a silver glint in the demon's hand.

"Isabelle!" I shout, jumping onto the back of the demon and pinning him onto the ground. Caught off guard, the demon just lies underneath me, its slime seeping through my clothes. I don't hesitate before slamming the point of my dagger into its chest.

"Izzy, are you alright?" Alec asks, while checking his sister for drastic cuts or injuries.

"Alec, I'm fine," Izzy sighs before pulling her brother into a hug. "You shouldn't worry so much."

I feel a horrible pang in my stomach- jealousy. Even though I had been living with Alec and Isabelle for over seven years and they called me their brother, they were naturally brother and sister, showing it all the time. Alec was naturally protective over his younger sister and Isabelle was naturally the one to sooth Alec when he needed it. I never had that comfortable sibling responsibility with them- I always seemed to be an outsider, an intruder within the Lightwood family.

With Isabelle and Alec chatting behind me, I find it hard to focus as I search the club, looking for the white haired boy that had been watching Isabelle- as if he had been waiting for the demon to kill her. I see a flash of white and realise that the boy is withdrawing from the club, shouldering his way through mundanes. I follow him outside.

"What do you want?" The boy asks me as soon as we were outside of the club.

"I want to know why you were just watching that demon with my sister, and not helping her," I growl, staring at the back of the boy's head. That silver hair, I recognise it from somewhere.

Laughing he turns to face me and I stare into his black soulless eyes.

"I don't waste my time on weak shadowhunters. The clave has already softened all of you up. You and I both know that the only way to save our race is to bring down the clave. And with you by my side, Jace Herondale, we are undefeatable," he states passionately, like an artist explaining their life's work.

"How do you know my name?" I ask confidently, unsheathing my knife and twirling it threateningly in my hand.

"To find out, you will have to renounce your old ways and leave your family. Come, Jace Herondale, and join my sister and me." He reaches out his hand in the way that one might welcome an old friend. That's when I realise; 'sister', silver hair, black eyes... Sebastian, Clary's brother.

I feel a flash of anger and protectiveness over Clary appear on my face.

"Yes, Jace. I am Clarissa's brother," he says, slowly bobbing his head up and down as if talking to a child. "She's quite the actress isn't she? She got you to tell her all about yourself, your family, your background, and your special abilities."

I feel my pulse beating in my neck. Clary tricked me, she played me, and I fell for her vulnerable beauty and innocence. I hear the muffled sound of someone shouting my name, but I brush it off assuming I am just imagining things. Taking my stunned silence as their cue, a small figure suddenly came visible beside me.

I manage to choke out one word before being consumed by darkness; "Clary."
