Chapter 3- By the Angel, No!
Clary POV
When we finally reach my class in room C4, Alec turns to me and opens his mouth as if to say something. He sighs heavily and closes his mouth, as if completely forgetting what he was about to say. His brow furrowed, he walks into the class to be glared at by the most raisin-like person I have ever seen.
"Alexander, would you like to explain why you are late to my class?" She picks up a meter ruler and jabs Alec in the shoulder with it.
"Yes miss," Alec wraps his hand around the top of my arm and yanks me into the classroom, in full view of all the students. Shyly, I tuck a loose strand of my blazing hair behind my ear and look down at the tiled floor. "I was showing the new girl round."
I turn around to look at Alec, silently asking him what to do, praying that he understood. Thank the Angel he did and he whispers "Mrs Ainsley," into my ear.
Wait, thank the what now?
"Good morning, Mrs Ainsley, I'm Clary," I say, holding my hand out for her to shake it, ignoring the uneasy feeling in my stomach. The old lady just looks at it as of it was the most disgusting thing she has ever seen and turns to face the whiteboard. "Okay then," I mumble awkwardly, once again looking to Alec for help.
He just sighs and shakes his head, messing up his midnight black hair, and pushes me toward an empty seat at the back of the class. I obey, and without another word slide into the highly uncomfortable chair.
I try and pay attention to Mrs. Ainsley's droning voice, and I make as many notes as I can, but at some point my mind drifts off, remembering the day of the demon, and I struggle to pull myself back into reality.
"Miss Fray? Miss Fray!" A harsh voice shouts, letting me break free from my own memories.
"Yes?" I say, quickly scanning the board to see if I could guess the answer to whatever question she was inevitably going to ask me. When I hear no reply, I look at Mrs Ainsley, who's leaning ever so slightly towards me, eyebrow raised. "Yes, miss," I correct myself.
"Would you like to answer the question, Miss Fray?" she asks me, moving to block my view of the board.
"Huh?" I mumble, to receive a few snickers from people in the class. What a great first impression, Clary. I think bitterly to myself
"X equals M C squared over Y," I hear a deep voice whisper to my left. I don't know why, but something makes me listen to him, and I repeat the answer to the teacher.
"Correct," Mrs Ainsley says, momentarily watching me, a lion teasing its helpless prey. She continues to talk about something I didn't understand and without looking at him, I whispered my thanks to the owner of the deep voice who gave me the answer.
"No problem," he replies, and I turn to look at his familiar beaming white smile. "Little sister."
