Chapter 14- Darkened lives.
Clary POV
"Clary?" Jace asks; his golden eyes full of betrayal. "How could you?"
I look at the floor avoiding his pained look, but I still feel his burning frustration sizzling into my skin. I know that if I tell him the truth now, Sebastian with do something unforgiveable to Simon or my mother. I just keep my head down and keep clenching and unclenching my fists.
"Jace, join us and you can have anything you've ever wanted." Sebastian leans forward and whispers something quietly to Jace. I only catch one word: Clary.
Jace clenches his strong jaw and refuses to look at me, but instead is glaring daggers at Sebastian. Sebastian turns and walks toward me, his stele poking out of his pocket. He pulls it out and grabs my wrist. Gritting my teeth, I try and pull away- but his stone hard grip doesn't falter.
Two cold hands remain on my shoulders, squeezing tightly like a vice. I look at the calloused hands and follow them up to a red clothed chest. My eyes travel up to the strangers hair which is as black as coal and then they sneak a look at the boy's eyes; never ending tunnels of darkness.
I feel a memory resurfacing about an army in red with eyes as black as night, as if their souls had been... endarkened.
I shake off the uneasy feeling and just blame it on my vivid imagination. I pull against the solid grip, but to no avail.
"What are you doing?" I spit at Sebastian who's still drawing a symbol with his stele. I feel the tug of another memory trying to resurface and I realise something: it's not just a symbol, but a rune.
"Play nice," Sebastian warns me. I feel the absence of the burning sensation so I look at my arm and recognise it as one of the symbols- runes- that I had drawn and left in my desk at home.
"How did you- What did you-" I stutter. "You were in my room?"
"The Predictability Rune," Sebastian announces, ignoring my outburst. "As created by the wonderful Clarissa Morgenstern herself." I bit my lip in frustration as Sebastian lifts up my hand and kisses the knuckle with surprising grace.
"What does that mean?" I hear Jace ask from across the cold, stony room. I look up at him in surprise only to see him watching me steadily. Despite our current circumstances I move my eyes to the swirling floor, cheeks flushing ferociously.
"Clarissa?" Sebastian says simply.
I sigh heavily, "Anything that I choose to do will be known by him before I do it. I could be about to blink and he'd know."
"You see, Clarissa," Sebastian cuts in, "as weak as you are, I also know that you're very unpredictable and I cannot allow the two of you to be in a room without knowing what you are going to do." Jace takes a step forward as if he is planning to do something drastic.
"Ashley!" Sebastian orders and a tall blonde guy steps forward and blocks Jace's way.
Jace's stone hard glare relaxes slightly as some silent communication passes between the two. Reluctantly, Jace takes a step back and the boy named Ashley moves to hover slightly behind him.
"Alright, so Ashley, take Jonathan and Clarissa to their room," Sebastian orders.
"It's Clary," I say at the exact same time that Jace exclaims his correct name. We look at each other in shock, but I break away first, looking sheepishly at the ground.
The boy in red roughly grips the back of my arms and brutally turns me to face the door. Out of the corner of my eye I see Ashley hold onto the top of Jace's left arm and he begins to pull him through the door.
As soon as we have turned the first corner and are out of Sebastian's sight, Ashley tells the other boy to leave us. The mindless boy obeys and releases the top of my arms. Ashley lets go of Jace and moves to stand behind me, his hands placed gently on my shoulders. "Let's go," he says before steering me down a different dark corridor.
Ashley leads us to a door with brass handles engraved with magnificent birds.
"Herondale?" Jace asks.
"I suppose that he has been expecting you for a while," Ashley answers in his clear English accent, pushing the door open and pulling on a chord to turn on the light.
"I thought Clary only told him about me yesterday," I wince at Jace's causal tone; as if my betrayal was no longer a question, but solid fact.
"I don't know, mate. Stop asking me so many questions that I don't know the answer to! I've told you a million times: Sebastian doesn't tell me anything," his comically irritated tone makes me stifle a laugh. "Besides, if I knew, I wouldn't tell you," he winks at me and Jace chuckles softly.
"Nice to meet you Clarissa," Ashley smiles to me. I don't answer, but walk past him and move into the room. "Wow dude, your girlfriend's a mute," he laughs before walking out of the room and closing the door quietly behind him.
I sit on the cloud-like mattress and watch as Jace walks through to the bathroom. The sky blue curtains that frame the only four poster bed swoop down like an old Victorian dress. On the far side of the room is a single white desk and on it, a small note. I stand and walk over to the desk in a trance, my eyes focused on one word in calligraphy: Clarissa.
A/N
Sorry about this weird font- I used it for Sebastian's handwriting and now I dont know how to turn it back. So comment if you know how to do that... Comment and vote if you like it and comment any gramatical errors- I think I spelt grammatical wrong... oh well.
Anyway, I'm signing out.
Okay- now I feel stupid. When I first typed it up, it was a weird font but when I posted it, it was normal, so I don't know what to say...
