Chapter 15- Don't Believe it; Believe Me.

Clary POV

I ignore Jace moving back into the room to hover behind me. I just turn so that my back is to the wall and he cannot read the note.

I read through the note, each line getting worse and worse. After reading it, I screw up the note into a tight ball in my hand and throw it across the room, Jace ducking just before it hit him.

"What was that for?" he asks.

"Sorry," I sigh, moving to sit on the bed.

"What for? For throwing the ball of paper at me or for betraying me?" Jace asks, walking over to me and standing before me.

With him towering over me, I feel like a little kid being lectured by their dad for playing with his tools. A horrible sense of dread fills up inside me, a rubber band being pulled tight around my lungs. "Clary, how could you?"

"I didn't have a choice," I reply. "You wouldn't understand."

"No, I don't understand," he spits, his voice raising slightly. "You put my whole family in danger just because I left you alone at Taki's. I just can't believe it."

"Then don't," I say standing up, even though I was still tiny. "Don't believe it; believe me. Do you really think I'd be that petty and pathetic? If anyone told me that you had betrayed me- willingly that is- I wouldn't believe it for a second. I have faith in you. I've only known you for a few days, yet I know that you would risk the world for your family. I would never, ever, try to test you like that."

"Then why-" Jace begins.

"It doesn't matter, Jace," I say finally. "What's done is done; you can't change it so don't try to."

"One final question." Jace looks up at me through his golden eyelashes. "Why didn't you tell me you're a Morgenstern? You're Valentine's child- dangerous and deadly."

"I would hardly call myself deadly," I laugh. "I never knew my father- I was raised by my mother- and when I was eleven, Sebastian just appeared, claiming to be my brother. He's done so many terrible things to me that... I don't know... I just could never put myself into the same catagory as him. I am not a Morgenstern and I never will be. I refuse."

I watch Jace step away from me slightly as I drop heavily back on to the bed. That's when I realise: there is only one bed.

"I'll take the floor," I say, grabbing a pillow off of the bed and chucking it onto the floor.

"What are you talking about?" Jace questions.

"We can't sleep in the same bed," I reply before sliding onto the floor and resting my head on the pillow.

"Why not?" He asks innocently. He walks into the bathroom and turns on the shower head. When he walks back into the room and sees my incredulous expression, he raises his eyebrows at me and smirks.

"No," I say.

"Alright then; I'll take the floor and you can have the bed," he laughs.

"No," I say again, my eyes drooping heavily. "I'm taking the floor, after all- I'm the reason we're both here."

I cannot hear Jace's snarky reply as I am already too far gone.
